South Africa, Pinetown, Thursday evening, a truck skipped a red traffic signal, crashing into multiple cars that were responding to a green light. It was reported that the death toll rose to 27. Video footage, which appears to have been filmed from the dashboard of another vehicle waiting to approach the intersection, has been released on YouTube.
In this horrific video footage, one can see that people were waiting for the traffic lights to turn green, when approaching the intersection a large truck at an astonishing speed crashed into the vehicles, pushing them out of the way and into pieces.
The twenty-three year old truck driver was arrested shortly after the incident and will be facing multiple charges for manslaughter in court. It has also been reported that the truck driver’s license has expired.
Colonel Vincent Mdunge said, “He has been charged with culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.”
It has been reported by the Kwazulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate, which could be a probable cause, that the trucks braking system had failed. The incident will be investigated further.
The loss of such a high number of people, some of them breadwinners is painful and has affected so many households negatively. We urge road users especially drivers to exercise caution on the roads especially when carrying passengers. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased and wish those in hospital a speedy recovery.
A statement released on Friday by the Jeff Radebe, South Africa’s interim President, has expressed his grief in conjunction to the incident, urging people to drive more responsibly on the roads.
