Athens, September 28, 2013: The Greek police have arrested sixteen members of the far-right Golden Dawn party, including its head Michaloliaks. The other two important members of the party under arrest are the Golden Dawn’s spokesman and a member of Greek parliament. According to the police sources these politicians have been arrested on two separate charges. One, for the founding of a criminal organization and two, the recent stabbing of a popular rapper Pavlos Fyssas by an activist of the party, on September 17.
Michaloliaks speaking to the press has cited these arrests as political motivated and amounting to political victimization of the opposition by the government. It is the first time since 1947 that arrests of such nature have taken place in Greece.
According to the other opposition parties in the Greek parliament these politically motivated arrests set a bad parliamentary precedent.
