Not everyone in the world of sports understands the Fed-Ex Cup. It began in 2007. Its goal was to accomplish two things. First, it was meant to extend the PGA season beyond the PGA Championship, and the second was to create interest for the top ten golfers in the world, drawing them into a competition which offered both a challenge and an enormous monetary reward. Tiger Woods won the cup in 2007 and 2009; he may win his third this year.
Points are earned toward the championship throughout the season. A Fed-Ex event gives the winner 500 points. At the end of the PGA Championship, rankings are posted going into the playoffs, which take place in four out of the next five weeks.
The playoffs began last week at the Barclays in New Jersey City. The winner of the first three playoff matches will receive 2,500 points. Tiger Woods was in first place entering the tournament. He came in second in New Jersey, and remained in the number one spot. Today, Labor Day, is the final day of the Deutsche Bank Championship playing in Norton, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. Tiger has no chance of winning today, but based on the standings at the end of play Sunday, he will remain in the first position.
The golfers get a week off next week. Play will resume on September 9th at the BMW Championship in Lake Forest, Illinois, with the field reduced to 70 players. The winner of the BMW will receive eight million dollars, in addition to the 2,500 points.
The players then get another week’s rest, resuming play at The Presidents Cup in Dublin, Ohio, on September 30th. The final tournament will have 30 players, and a purse of eight million dollars. The points will be reset according to a formula created by the rules committee. The overall points winner will receive a check for 10 million dollars.
If you haven’t watched it, the final tournament can be mesmerizing. The top five golfers in points, control their destiny, but past winners have come from lower rankings.
Tiger Woods is in position to win the Cup, even if he doesn’t win either of the last two tournaments. He has five wins this season, but failed to perform well at any of the four majors.
In great position to challenge Tiger are Phil Mickelson, who won the British Open, Adam Scott, who won the Masters, and Jason Dufner who won the PGA Championship.
If you enjoy watching the best golfers in the world do their thing, tune in. Tiger Woods just may win his third Fed-ex cup. Today’s final is on NBC.
