U.S. Approves of Arms to Syrian Rebels [Video]

It was reported by a U.S. official in a CNN report that CIA funded arms are flowing into the possession of Syrian based rebels. It seems the U.S. approves of arming Syrian rebels as the result of current allegations of chemical weapons use by the government. The notification was initially revealed in the media by the Washington Post.

“That is something we are not going to dispute, but we are not going to publicly speak to it,” said the official. It was reported the foreign made arms were purchased and coordinated by the CIA for transport to rebels in Syria. The weapons were said to contain light arms, anti-tank munitions and shells. Rebels in Syria have carried out violent attacks on government soldiers in Syria and the weapons would certainly bolster their cause.

The rebel factions in Syria, Syrian National Coalition and the Free Syrian Army, haven’t acknowledged publicly receiving weapons from the West. “We have some promises from the U.S. administration of shipment of weapons in a short period of time, but until now we have not received any,” stated Louay al-Mokdad, Free Syrian Army Political and Media Coordinator.

It is apparent that the U.S. approves of arms transports to rebels in Syria. With recent revelations of chemical weapons use by the Syrian government, the U.S. is moving towards aggressive tactics in dealing militarily with the Syrian problem. It has also been noted that weapons allotments included night vision goggles, body armor and other personal military supplies.

Observers have said that Secretary of State John Kerry seemed to reveal hints of U.S. arms approval to rebels in his speech on Tuesday. At a Google+ Hangout session Kerry said, “Many of the items that people complained were not getting to them are now getting to them.” The statement was not fully explained but many see it as confirmation of White House approval.

Kerry’s obscure statement was declined comment by spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan of the National Security Council. “We aren’t able to inventory or provide timelines for every type of assistance we provide to the Syrian opposition,” she said to reporters. Officials have refused to elaborate further on the true meaning of what was intended of the statement.

It is known that Russia steadily supplies the Syrian government with weapons and officials have lobbied President Obama for increased outright support of the rebel cause. Such would make for a stronger moderate force to face the Syrian government. It is believed that a change in the Syrian regime could be a remedy for the festering problem in the nation.

With the U.S. approving of arms to the Syrian rebels, it could be a move to weaken the nation internally for U.S. military operations if intervention is required. Secretary John Kerry has been scheduled to meet with Russian Officials to discuss options on dealing with the Syrian issue. Putin openly questioned U.S. authority in a New York Times piece concerning military action against Syria.
