Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are proving to be the Golden girls we have all come to know and love. Today it was announced that the dynamic duo will be hosting the 2014 and 2015 Golden Globe Awards. Considering they drew in an audience of 19.7 million I would say that this is a very wise choice.
Hollywood Foreign Press and Dick Clark Productions, producers of the Globes, have been in lengthy negotiations with Poehler and Fey. Their previous stint as hosts of the show not only generated positive review but also brought in 19.7 million total viewers, which was a six-year high. In terms of ratings, it pulled a 6.4 in the highly desirable 18-49 age group, which was up over 28% from the year before.
President of alternative and late night programming for NBC, Paul Telegdy is totally on board, saying that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are the most talented comedy writers and performers in the business. He claims that they are the main reason that the Golden Globes was one of the most entertaining awards show last season. Their two year commitment has him positively elated.
The pair have recently been the subject of 2015 Oscar talks. Fey was quick to dismiss further speculation, saying that there is too much prep work involved with the Oscars. All the singing and dancing and pre-taped segments is just too large of a task.
Their recent stint at the Prime Time Emmy’s may have led to the new gig. Poehler and Fey made a far too brief and all too hilarious appearance in host Neil Patrick Harris’ opener. Furthermore, they openly acknowledge that NBC had approached them about hosting the Golden Globes again and both seemed ready and willing for it to happen. Fey herself said that it certainly was fun and that they both had a really good time.
CEO of Dick Clark Productions, Allen Shapiro, says that Amy and Tina have a very unique chemistry. It’s what makes them one of the most captivating comedy pairings of all time. Of course they are thrilled to have them back for two more years!
Both Poehler and Fey are Saturday Night Live alums, Poehler as cast member from 2001-2010 and Fey as cast member and writer from 1997-2006. and have remained very involved with NBC. Fey’s 30 Rock was a hit for over seven seasons for the network and recently took its leave. She has a production deal with NBCUniversal and is actively developing a new series for them. And Poehler’s very popular Parks and Recreation just entered its fourth season.
There is no doubt that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are indeed golden girls. Their zany brand of comedy is tasteful and lighthearted and their undeniable chemistry will have everyone talking about their antics in the days to come. Their Golden Globes hosting reprisal is certainly a coup. I can’t think of a better reason to look forward to awards season.
