There are iconic beauties whose image lives eternally even though they are long gone. Think Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Liz Taylor. But even under the radar and away from the Hollywood scene, Monica Bellucci still claims gentlemen’s hearts. With news of her splitting from her husband, the French actor Vincent Cassel after 14 years of marriage, jokes popped up on the internet about how it is time for Monica to get another husband.
Being a curious writer, I went around asking some Egyptian men why they thought so highly of Monica. She is not a blonde bombshell like Marilyn Monroe, nor did she have Liz Taylor’s cat-like eyes. What’s the secret in her capturing hearts and souls even when she is rapidly moving to her fifties?
“She is the raw material for beauty,” Mohamed Abo Ouf, 25 years old, said. “It’s not about her looks, more of her soul. She has a divine sort of womanliness that shows on her face as it rises from her soul. Just like the last scene from her movie Malèna, 2002, when Malèna walks back in the town -that despised her once for her beauty- with her husband, and yet all men secretly desire her.”
Amir Gamal, an Egyptian doctor says that Monica is one of the greatest proofs on the validity of Evolution theory. “Every single breath that woman takes, every blink, or smile, or gasp, just makes you connect with her. She is a natural and that’s not even the greatest thing about her. Her aura just swallows every other woman in the room so that whenever she walks into a place, there is nobody but Monica.”
Mohamed Abo Ouf even jokes, “Polygamy is supposed to be legal for Monica. She should be marrying 4 or 8 men at a time. It’s wrong for only one man to possess that infinite beauty.”
Monica has been once a very prominent face on the Hollywood scene. She appeared in famous mainstream movies like Tears of the Sun (2003), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), The Passion of the Christ (2004), The Brothers Grimm (2005) and Don’t Look Back (2009). Men’s Health named her one of the “100 Hottest Women of All-Time” while AskMen.com named her the number one most desirable woman in 2002. But even with such selections, Monica never shied away from controversial movies. Her 2002 French mystery-thriller Irréversible, in which Monica played a rape victim, featured a 15 minutes-long rape scene. The film was marked as the “most walked-out-of” movie in 2003.
Monica Bellucci has never taken to becoming a Hollywood image and icon. She says she has never stopped being an Italian:
“Wherever I go I am Italian. The way I talk, the way I eat, the way femininity is important to me. The way I love Italian food.”
Monica never hid behind her armor of make-up. She is frequently spotted in her au naturel moment, with casual clothing and her long black hair, a seamlessly silk sheet on her back. She always defied the conventional Hollywood body type and she says that she loves to eat and that she never watches what she eats. If she gets fat, Monica says she will simply wear black.
Beauty is a topic of diversity and controversy in its own, but as Monica walks on the red carpet in lace gowns or polka dot dresses, the craze of the photographers and the non-stop camera flashes indicate that gentlemen will always prefer Monica.
