Charlie Hunnam Leaves Bondage for Bikes

Charlie Hunnam Leaves Bondage for Biking
Considering all the outrage that came about when Charlie Hunnam was named as the actor who would portray Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey film, it comes as no real surprise that Hunnam has stepped away from the role. He leaves bondage for the world of motor bikes in the hit show Sons of Anarchy. Pleading contractual difficulties, the actor is now off of the project, according to Universal Pictures.

Fans were shocked at the announcement, especially since the actor has been talking about how seriously he took the opportunity to bring housewife fantasy Christian Grey to life on the big screen. Sadly, like many other actors in a successful television program, his commitment to the FX series has created a scheduling problem problem with the Fifty Shades film.

The film, with its release due in under a year will be on hold until producers can find a replacement. This turn of events should please the book’s author E L James who really wanted to see fellow Englishman Robert Pattinson in the role of the S&M aficionado Grey.

The many female fans of the S&M fantasy romance series had their own favorite actors in mind for the role of Grey. Some have always preferred Ian Somerhalder or Matt Boomer in the role. Since Universal announced the casting of 33 year-old Sons of Anarchy actor, Twitter and the internet have been hot with angry fans who felt that he did not fit their idea of who Grey was.

A source close to Hunnam has revealed that all the increased interest in the actor, as well as the pressure from unhappy fans, put Charlie off playing the role. The same source also said that the actor did not like too much attention and that alone probably made him back out. Hunnam’s decision to leave bondage for biking now leaves the filmmakers in the lurch, since they seem to have no one else in mind to play the role of Grey.

It is interesting to note that when Hunnam was cast there was no mention of a schedule conflict between Sons of Anarchy and Fifty Shades of Grey. It has been suggested that the actor didn’t really want to play the part of a man who had a fetish for bondage. The thought that his career would have gone in an unwanted direction had he made the film, made him back down at the last minute.

Sources have said that Hunnam also has problems with the fame he’s already gotten from the hit FX television program. He apparently doesn’t like to be told what to do and the idea of conforming to a role that did not really fit him, bothered him a lot.

According to Universal Studios, the real reason that Charlie Hunnam has backed out is down to the Sons of Anarchy shooting schedule preventing him enough time to properly immerse himself in the role of Grey. A joint statement released by the studios and Focus Features relayed this information on October 12.

A source who has not spoken to the Sons of Anarchy star for some time said they were shocked when Hunnam took the role as the film would have meant too much in the way of media interaction with the private actor.

Now that Charlie Hunnam has left bondage for motor bikes, the filmmakers will be scrambling to find a replacement for the actor. Robert Pattinson may be the favorite, but his casting could also be difficult because of current contractual obligations. Fans will be desperate to see who will bring their fantasy figure to life. But not, apparently, if Ian Somerhalder is cast.
