The movie adaptation of Kate Snell’s novel “Diana – Her Last Love” has ex-lover Hasnat Khan angry over the portrayal of his relationship with Princess Diana. Released on September 20, the movie covers the last two years of Diana’s life as reimagined by the author, who claims she researched her characters thoroughly. The movie was directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, and it features Naomi Watts as the late Princess Diana, mother of Princes William and Harry. The part of Diana’s ex-boyfriend, Doctor Hasnat Khan, is played by Naveen Andrews. Khan and the Princess of Wales were involved in a low-profile romance in the 1990’s following the Princess’s divorce from Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne.
Dr. Khan, a successful cardiologist, has not watched the movie but says “it’s based on a superficial idea.” Furthermore, he believes that the plot is a “betrayal” of the real facts of his relationship with the Princess of Wales. Novelist Kate Snell insists that she did her research and put together a fairly accurate portrayal of the love affair between Diana and Hasnat Khan, which ended some time before the Princess was killed in a Parisian car crash. Khan, well known for his humanitarian efforts and current medical support of needy children in Ethiopia, admits that the people involved in the film may have good intentions; however he believes that they have willingly made a profit off of his ex-lover’s name.
“The film-makers might be good people who do good things for others. I don’t know. But at the end of the day their job has been to pick up a few stories from relatives and friends and sell a movie. If they want to go some way to making amends to my family and me, they should donate some of the proceeds to Chain of Hope.”
Chain of Hope is an organization dedicated to helping sick children that are in need of life-saving heart operations. Khan is involved in the process of bringing children who suffer from cardiac diseases to the United Kingdom and other European countries where they can receive pro-bono medical attention. He also visits ailing children in Ethiopia and provides local medical support. It is this kind of humanitarian element in the doctor’s character that led Diana to refer to him as “Mr. Wonderful.” Right now, however, his good nature is being tested by the implication that his family rejected his relationship with Diana because she was not a Muslim woman.
Princess Diana was never a controversial part of his life, ex-lover Khan says. “Both my parents, grandmother and all close relatives who met Diana liked her very much and never objected to our relationship. They were very much happy for us to make a decision ourselves and made it clear they would support it 100 percent. We both had their blessing.”
The Princess Diana movie, “Diana”, has not been well-received by critics, and it has received poor reviews since opening in September.
