Forget the latest outing at the hot new restaurant in town. Forget vacation pictures and sonograms. Forget that hilarious thing your kid just said. Forget the political rants and the complaints about co-workers. Derek Medina is no ordinary Facebook poster. While most of his friends were probably updating their statuses with what they had for dinner the previous night and cute pictures of their children, Medina, 31, took to the social media website to post graphic pictures of his dead wife’s body after he allegedly murdered her. Authorities say Medina shot his wife, Jennifer Alonso, six times before taking pictures of her and posting them on Facebook. Along with the photos, he wrote, “you’ll see me in the news.” This alleged Facebook killer was obviously not concerned about being caught.
Police moved in quickly and made an arrest. They report that prior to Alonso being murdered by her husband, she wrote on Facebook that she “felt like ripping his face off an hour ago.” She was referencing the fact that Medina had overslept and missed having a date with her. Alonso told a friend that she was thinking about leaving the relationship and that Medina had been cursing at her.
Despite posting pictures of his wife’s dead body on Facebook and saying that his friends would see him in the news, he has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Authorities say that Alfonso confessed everything to them in person after turning himself in at the police station, stating that he shot his wife six times because she was abusive toward him while they were having a fight. He states that she kicked and punched him during the altercation. During that incident, he said, his wife told him she was planning on leaving the relationship.
USA Today reports that the couple had a very stormy marriage. Alonso recorded in her journal that she was angry with Medina and that at times she felt like she would “explode.” The couple had been married, divorced and then remarried.
Medina also confessed on Facebook, saying “I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys miss you guys take care Facebook people you will see me in the news. My wife was punching me and I am not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did I hope you understand me.” (sic) Medina allegedly shot his wife while their 10 year old daughter watched television in an upstairs bedroom.
Medina claims that Alonso had threatened him with a knife during the altercation, but that he had been successful in wrestling it away from her and placing it in a drawer before he shot her. He then posted the photos on Facebook. It took five hours before Facebook removed the images, during which time the pictures were viewed by thousands of people.
This alleged Facebook killer coldly took pictures of his dead wife’s body and posted them on Facebook for the world to see. He confessed on Facebook in writing and to police verbally of his crime. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is awaiting trial.
