GTA V is once again crushing its competition by winning the Golden Joystick Game of the Year. I know, I know. We can all pick our jaws up off the floor. But the reality is that GTA V is on a roll and shows no signs of stopping.
Green Man Gaming’s annual Golden Joystick Awards was held on Friday in London and gave out awards for what is considered to be the best in international gaming. With a record crushing 10 million votes, the Golden Joystick is the world’s premier video game awards.
To the surprise of no one, Grand Theft Auto V, GTA V to those in the know, crushed its competition and walked away with the coveted Game of the Year. SteamOS took top honors for Best Gaming Platform, snatching it away from Xbox 360 and nearly outdated PlayStation3.
The honor of biggest loser of the evening went to Nintendo, who lost out on every award opportunity including the Best Handheld Game, a category that it usually takes handily.
The winner in that category was Assasin’s Creed III: Liberation, made by the PS Vita. In the category of Best Newcomer, The Last of Us, Naughty Dog’s masterful creation, came out on top. The Last of Us also won the award for Best Storytelling. And The Most Wanted award, including nominees Xbox One and PS4, was given to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
There were only two categories that were not voted on by the public. One of which was the highly coveted Hall of Fame award, which went to Call of Duty. With over 160 million in sales, it was a well deserved win. The other award was the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to Ken Levine, creator of BioShock, which also took home the Best Visual Design Award.
But the night belonged to GTA V. The game has been breaking records and winning the hearts of gamers since its release earlier this month. Guinness Book of World Records has recently cited it as the fastest selling video game ever, with billions of units already sold. It is estimated to sell about 25 million more additional units in 2014. The game, which cost over 27 million dollars to make, was able to earn more than four times that amount in only 3 days after its release. The Grand Theft Auto franchise, first launched in 1997, has shipped millions of units ever since.
Other winners from last evening’s events include Best Multiplayer going to Payday 2, Best Indie Game going to Mark of the Ninja, Best Gaming Moment going to The Definition of Insanity, Studio of the Year going to Naughty Dog, YouTube Gamer Award going to Yogscast, and Best Mobile/Tablet Game of the Year going to COM: Enemy Unknown.
While GTA V has once again managed to crush its competition by winning Golden Joystick Game of the Year its maker, RockStar, is also making the news. The promised first round of $500,000 stimulus money was due in online gamers accounts earlier this week. This just proves that you don’t get to the top of the gaming world by resting on your laurels. RockStar is proving themselves to be, well, rock stars.
