Grand Jurors in the JonBenet Ramsey case voted to indict her parents on charges of child abuse, according to new documents. Court documents that had been sealed up until now are showing that in 1999 a Colorado grand jury voted to bring up Ramsey’s parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, on charges of abuse that caused the death of the 6 year-old girl. The grand jury also intended to charge them with being accessories to the crime.
Charges were not filed, however, due to the fact that the district attorney could not find sufficient evidence to indict. In 2008, however, a new DA claimed that new DNA evidence had been obtained that cleared both John and Patsy Ramsey and their son in the death of the little girl.
On Friday, a Colorado district court authorized the release of previously sealed court documents. These documents are said to bring new attention to the unsolved death of JonBenet back in December of 1996. Ramsey was a beautiful girl who was the sweetheart of the beauty pageant world and whose reported kidnapping and subsequent murder stunned the nation.
The newly released documents show that the grand jury fully intended to charge both John and Patsy Ramsey with two identical counts of child abuse. The documents also state that the grand jury alleged that the parents permitted the child to be placed in a situation that posed threat of injury to the child’s health or life which may have resulted in the death of JonBenet Ramsey. In addition, it alleges that both parents were potential accessories to the crime, as they rendered assistance to a “person” with the intent to hinder, prevent, or delay the conviction or punishment of said “person” for the commission of a crime.
The documents did not go as far as to provide any further details on who the alleged person was. The grand jury also went on to accuse the Ramseys of committing the offenses on or around December 25th and December 26th of 1996.
The nearly 17 year-old case of JonBenet Ramsey remains shocking. Back on December 26, 1996, Patsy Ramsey awoke to find her daughter missing. After finding a two and a half page ransom note demanding the sum of $118,000, the same amount John Ramsey had received as a holiday bonus, Patsy contacted local authorities. The Boulder Police conducted a brief search of the house but could not find any sign of a break-in. John Ramsey and two friends took it upon themselves to conduct a more thorough search of the basement. There, in a room that was being used as a wine cellar, they discovered young JonBenet’s body. She had been covered in a white blanket and had a cord wrapped around her neck, ties around her hands, and duct tape covering her mouth.
The fact that grand jurors voted to indict JonBenet Ramsey’s parents on child abuse charges back in 1999 may seem rather disturbing news. Patsy Ramsey succumbed to cancer back in 2006 while John Ramsey remarried back in 2011. And while the murder is still considered to be open, it has been classified as a cold case. Only time will tell if anything more is to come from the newly released documents.
