The phony government shutdown continues, meaning that federal government employees are enjoying paid vacations and life in the rest of the country goes on as normal. Today, however, the Tea Party descended on the National Mall; not to protest, but to clean it up. If they can manage to clean Congress of establishment Republicans who – along with the Democratic Party – have betrayed the nation, the United States will finally be on the road to recovery and on track to restore the freedoms that the oppressive Obama regime and its fanatical followers are frantically attempting to strip away.
Tea Party Patriot organizers successfully applied for a permit to rally on the Mall today. On a side note; the fact that any group, regardless of political persuasion, is even required to obtain such a permit shows how much the First Amendment has been suppressed by this, and previous, administrations. Instead protesting, however, the Tea Partiers were picking up trash.
Conservative-Libertarian media giant Glenn Beck helped to rally supporters; calling on people to leave their signs at home and bring trash bags instead. Speaking to the crowd before the clean-up commenced, Beck said “All anyone is asking for is not equality, but equal justice under the law.” He went on to say “If you’re different than me, that’s cool. I don’t need to control your life, and you don’t need to control my life. Let’s live like free men. Let’s live like decent Americans.”
Beck was joined by members of Freedom Works, members of Congress, veterans and even Slate political reporter and MSNBC contributor David Weigel, who tweeted a number of messages from the event; among them “Cool to see a bunch of conservatives defying The Man by cleaning up stuff” accompanied by a photograph of a police barrier blocking the Mall with a sign which read: “This site is CLOSED do not enter.” In all likelihood, Mr. Wiegel will soon be looking for a new job.
After cleaning up the National Mall, however, the Tea Party needs to clean out Congress. Assuming that the Democrats don’t thoroughly rig the 2014 midterm elections – which is highly likely – the time for this is certainly ripe: Congress has an abysmal approval rating and, although the left-leaning mainstream media continues to gloat over the Republicans’ worst-ever approval ratings, the Democratic Party is, currently, at its lowest level of middle-class support in its entire history. Obama’s approval rating is well below 50 percent in all recent polls; The most recent Real Clear Politics (RCP) average puts him at 44.6 percent and Gallup has him at 42 percent approval. When it comes to his handling of the economy, the President enjoys the approval of just 39.8 percent in the most recent RCP average of polling data. Although various partisan assumptions can be gleaned from different polling sources, one indisputable statistic looms large; in polls that gage the mood of the nation, regarding the direction of the country, the overwhelming majority of Americans say that they feel the country is on the wrong track.
These numbers, of course, imply bad news for both parties, come 2014, but the Republicans enjoy a more comfortable majority in the House of Representatives than do the Democrats in the Senate. Several prominent establishment Republicans will face challenges from real Conservatives and, although the Republican Party faces something of a facelift, it appears unlikely that will lose their House majority. It is worth bearing in mind that the Republicans did not enjoy impressive polling numbers prior to their crushing victory in the 2010 midterms.
Meanwhile, the political shenanigans continue, with the President continuing to refuse to negotiate on any point, whilst insisting that he is willing to negotiate. During each of the numerous previous government shutdowns, every sitting President has negotiated. The Republican establishment has continued to trash the Conservative wing of the party and bends ever further to the President’s will, offering more and more concessions and – at every turn – being met by flat-out refusal from a President who has acquired the well-deserved Twitter hashtag of #PresidentStompyFoot.
The current situation is, in reality, not even a challenge for Obama; he knows that the mainstream media, which has long ago abandoned the trappings of professional journalism, is still giving him a pass and promoting the illusion that the blame lies squarely with the Republican Party. Both parties face a bumpy ride between now November, 2014. When the Republicans eventually give in and hand Obama everything he wants, they will face a tidal wave of disillusioned Conservatives and Libertarians, determined to clean house. The Democrats, for their part, will have a year to fix the economy; once their demands have been met and the federal government is again fully functional, the President and his party will finally be all out of excuses; having had all their demands granted, they will have no way left to blame their opponents. They will, finally, be the owners of this economy and will have to produce enormous and tangible improvements from which ordinary Americans benefit.
2014 scenarios are numerous: We may have a Democratic House and a Republican Senate; each party may well hold onto its respective majority – each, likely, smaller than it is now – or the Democrats may find themselves cast out almost entirely, should their continued insistence that nothing is their fault fall on deaf ears. The final possibility is that the Democrats benefit from Republican bloodletting – in which the Tea Party cleans out Congress of the old-guard Republican dinosaurs – and emerge with both Houses of Congress. In such a scenario, it is unlikely that the United States will avoid becoming a full-fledged dictatorship. If that seems like an extreme statement, one should start to listen carefully to the rhetoric coming out of the White House.
