The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost another key producer when Mike James was carted off on a stretcher on the team’s first series against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football. He joins a laundry list of teammates who have missed time due to injury this season.
Sporting a perfectly imperfect winless record heading into tonight’s matchup the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to be hoping to notch their first mark in the win column by beating a Dolphins team that has been heavily distracted by the off the field investigation into the conduct of their locker room. Specifically suspended lineman Richie Incognito towards fellow lineman Jonathan Martin.
A year ago rookie running back Doug Martin looked like a superstar in the making, however his sophomore campaign quickly came to an end with a shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve. His replacement, rookie Mike James looked to be an effective replacement, far outplaying his sixth round draft status so far.
Mike James and the Buccaneers were off to a hot start on their opening possession, marching down the field behind 41 quick yards from James. However on the goal line, Mike James was tackled just outside the end zone and appeared to roll his ankle in the process.
After the play James remained on the ground and later attempted to stand on his own power. This obviously caused him some severe pain as he quickly went back down to the turf. The Buccaneers training staff then came out to assist the rookie in leaving the field.
There is not yet word as to the extent of the injury, but based on the pain he appeared to be in after the play the Buccaneers should not plan on having Mike James in the lineup anytime soon.
Update: A sideline report indicated that the ankle injury was better than it initially looked. Mike James return to the Buccaneers lineup is questionable.
