Eminem and Rihanna have a lucky number in common, they are both seven times chart toppers, sharing seven times success. They are also sharing the credits on Eminem’s long awaited comeback, on the single The Monster. These two have now both been Number one in the UK charts seven times each. The only other previous artists to have accomplished this were The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Quite some acts to follow. Rihanna has done it in seven years straight.
With One Direction dominating just about all the awards going, it was quite a shock to find them toppled from their unstoppable dominance. The Monster saw off their Story of my Life even though it only came out a day after and had some catching up to do. The Kiwi teenager, Lorde, who had been holding the top spot with her song Royals, dropped back to second place.
Rihanna has now made music history with her collaboration with Eminem, and they will both be feeling good about their combined seventh lucky strike. She first shot to fame with Umbrella back in 2007. Since then she has been back time after time pumping out hits. Take a Bow, the following year, Run This Town in 2009, then, in consecutive years, Only Girl (in the World), What’s My Name, We Found Love and Diamonds. There must be very few people around who wouldn’t hear the opening bars to those songs and instantly recognize them. She is now sharing her lucky number seven spot with Eminem.
Eminem, aka Slim Shady, has not been so visible on the music scene of late. His new album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, coming out this week, is the first since Recovery in 2010. He seems to be back with a vengeance though, featuring prominently in the inaugural YouTube Music Awards in which he scooped the major award of Artist of the Year. He then went on to give an awesome performance of his new song Rap God. As the YouTube Awards were based on real hits to the site, it is a powerful testament to the rapper’s continued high popularity, with so many other acts coming in to prominence in the intervening years.
Another famous duo who are very keen on the number seven are David and Victoria Beckham. They named their fourth child, sweet little Harper Seven, with the numeral for her middle name. This was an allusion to the number her famous footballing father wore on his jersey in his Manchester United playing days. The Harper was from Harper Lee, Victoria’s favorite author.
The number seven has always been held to be lucky. One possible explanation for this is that the seventh day of the week, Sunday, is supposed to be a day of rest. This isn’t just a Christian allusion, as in Islam there are seven heavens and in Japanese culture there are seven samurai and seven bushido. Whether seven really is lucky or not, is certainly is at the moment for Eminem and Rihanna.
In other UK music news, James Blake came back from a fairly far out position outside the top 200, benefitting from the attention from his Mercury Music prize. His album Overgrown shot back to 23. Heading up the album chart is Arcade Fire’s Reflektor, which took over from Kary Perry’s Prism.
For Eminem and Rihanna, sharing the combined good luck of a number seventh time at the top of the charts, they can truly say that they have a Monster of a hit on their hands.
