A studio in Tokyo, Japan has recently unveiled what can only be called a virtual sex machine–and perhaps the most sophisticated one the world has ever seen. The latest technology in masturbation toys and virtual reality gaming have been combined into the “VR Tenga,” a machine that has been predicted by science fiction writers and casual masturbaters for decades.
The application of virtual reality technology to sex machines probably does not come as much of a surprise–it had to happen, eventually–and Japan is the most fitting place for the unveiling of such an item to the world marketplace. The country is known for high technology and its distinct otaku subculture, which for some includes sexy anime, ranging from cute to mindbogglingly perverse. Also, the birth rate in Japan has been plunging to record lows. A term in the Japanese media has been applied the phenomenon of those under 40 refraining from dating and or having sex: sekkusu shinai shokogun, or “celibacy syndrome.” Japan may be heading towards economic crisis with its declining population, and the VR Tenga can not do anything good at all for this.
The VR Tenga is being developed for the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality head-mounted display. In a simulated mock-up, the user is sitting on a reclining chair, viewing animated pornography on his virtual reality headset, while a robotic arm makes up and down motions–meant to manipulate the user’s penis. The apparatus has a sleek, mechanical design that almost brings to mind the robot arms used by space shuttles. Below is a video from its debut at Oculus Game Jam in Shibuya, Tokyo. The video may be offensive to some, but contains no real nudity; watch at your own risk.
The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is combined with a Tenga male masturbation toy and a Novint Falcon, the robotic gripping arm. The man who wishes to use the contraption simply must insert his penis into the Tenga, which is gripped by the Nivint Falcon. The video starts up, and the robot arm vibrates and strokes in time to the sex acts displayed on the virtual reality headset.
The Oculus Rift has been used as a sex simulator before. A game called Custom Maid 3D released a patch so that users could could use headset. The VR device has not been made available to the general consumer yet, but developers are already working with it and it is set to come out in the third quarter of 2014.
Many questions about the VR Tenga remain, such as: Can handicapped people benefit from it? Will there be a female version? Will there be homosexual versions? Pansexual furry adventure patch? Is it safe? Why does it have so many moving parts? Can hackers gain control of it remotely?
It’s too early to say what kind of implications the unveiling of a virtual sex machine will have on the young men of Japan, or whether the future of the human race as a whole will become uncertain.
