Jay Z and Barneys New York Return Arm in Arm

Jay Z and Barneys

In the wake of two recent cases of alleged racial profiling by Barneys New York department store, Jay Z’s fans have learned that he was preparing to launch his own clothing line for the holidays via Barneys New York. And, not accepting this, they made a lot of noise and demands that Jay Z back out of that partnership or be considered a traitor. After weeks of quietude and deep investigations into the racial profiling matter, today Jay Z and Barneys New York return arm in arm.

Everyone should have a happy reaction to this outcome, especially when they hear how wonderfully Jay Z outlined the way that things will run in the partnership.  Peace and not dissension is what most sensible people would opt for in this day and age.

In a statement released on Friday, Jay Z said, “I have agreed to move forward with the launch of (the Barneys New York Shawn Corey Carter) collection under the condition that I have a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling.” Jay Z added that he is in a “unique position” to affect “change to this disturbing issue.” And, he further stated “The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policy making to others hoping that someone addresses the problem. … I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on.”

In the alleged racial profiling incident, two black customers shopping at Manhattan’s Barneys New York who were using their own bankcards and money were accused of fraud, causing them to experience a very embarrassing moment. However, according to Jay Z, his own personal team has been keeping watch on the investigations presently conducted in the alleged racial profiling situation and they remain in touch with the office of the New York State Attorney General to obtain updates.

Who better than Jay Z is there to handle this serious matter? He clearly knows how to “hit 3 birds with one stone” and his aim is to end racial profiling, restore Barneys’ century-long good reputation and bring back the beauty of his own charitable endeavor, the Shawn Carter Foundation.

Jay Z has a terrific foundation! The Shawn Carter Foundation’s mission statement reads, “The mission of the Shawn Carter Foundation is to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships further their education at institutions of higher learning.” Jay Z and Barneys New York return arm-in-arm, with a set agreement to endow the cause with the proceeds from all of Barneys New York stores, including Barneys.com, as of November 20. Now, who can go wrong with such a partnership as that!

Some folk may laugh and point fingers at Barneys New York for seemingly racially profiling customers and losing vast reputation over it.  But, whether these allegations are true or not, it is still okay, since, for some reason, Jay Z himself strongly believes in the goodness of Barneys New York enough to do business with them.  And, now he has comes back with the power to call many splendid shots.

Perhaps, in the end, Barneys New York never really was racist and easily embraces Jay Z because he is a well-respected human being working hard to make an impact in the world of music, fashion and much unrest? After this turn of events, move aside, world: Jay Z and Barneys New York return arm in arm and we graciously thank them!

With due respect, Phil, even you don’t know, with any accuracy, what the true facts are in the case, hence your two keywords: “If” and “probably.”

My take on it is that Jay Z “is” in a “unique position” to affect “change to this disturbing issue,” and we should try to see this as a good thing, not a bad one. I don’t believe that Jay Z was so desperate for money he would cast off the racial issue and jumped in head first into partnership with Barneys New York. Going in to business with the retail store seemed OK with him to do, at that time, apparently because racism wasn’t an issue, but now that it bears that issue, Jay Z himself has the golden opportunity to oversee that racial profiling ends. If we were to pull Jay Z out of there, racial profiling is a sad situation that seems to be almost everywhere else that we turn. At least in his seat of authority, within that company, Jay Z can do his part and aim to make an impact in that regard.

“Seemingly racially profiling”??? “Whether these allegations are true or not, it is still okay”??? Who wrote this article, Jay-Z? Barney’s chairman? You’re not convincing anyone by sugarcoating what happened. If these allegations are true, it is NOT okay. I know enough about the situation to know that the allegations are probably true, but I’ll reserve final judgment until after the New York Attorney General’s Office has completed its investigation. Evidently, you’ve already made up your own mind that everything is okay because Jay Z says it is. SMH.
