A Colorado father took a picture of himself and his daughter then posted it on FaceBook before killing her. Allegedly Merrick McKoy shot Mia McKoy-Phanthavongsa, his 19-month-old daughter, in the head before turning the gun on himself.
McKoy broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in Westminster, Colorado on Monday morning. He violated his restraining order in an attempted murder-suicide stunt. The child’s 21-year-old mother, Kimphone “Kim” Phanthavongsa, said McKoy came in and was standing over her bed pointing a gun at her. After a brief struggle she got away from him and rushed out to a neighbor’s home in order to call the police.
Law enforcement arrived just in time to hear gunshots. They went into the apartment and found that the baby and her father had both been shot. According to KMGH-TV, the child was rushed to a hospital and declared dead. On Tuesday, McKoy’s condition had not been confirmed.
Colorado police say 22-year-old McKoy had a history of domestic abuse. Court records, following a recent domestic incident with Phanthavongsa, reveal the killer was charged on September 27 with burglary, assault, trespassing and telephone harassment. A mandatory protective order was issued by an Adams County judge on September 30.
McKoy posted the photo of him and his daughter together on his FaceBook page; along with several messages about the pending outcome.
He wrote a threatening message stating that he told Phanthavongsa he couldn’t live without her and she thought he was joking. He went on to write, “…now me Mia out this b*tch.” Then he wrote to his viewers asking them not to judge him because he had no choice.
McKoy claimed that murder-suicide was his only way out.
Phanthavongsa’s cousin, Smaly Chham, said McKoy was the type of guy that said, “If you aren’t with me you can’t be with nobody else.”
Friends who knew Mia said she had just taken her first steps which were considered a major milestone for the little princess.
Vannatda Sivixai said that little Mia was such an angel with a bright smile.
Family members said McKoy was extremely possessive; calling him a jealous and possessive brute.
McKoy’s sister, Veleisha McKoy, shared her grief concerning her niece on her FaceBook page. She wrote that she had just found out that her brother shot her baby niece and he also shot himself and is on life support.
Veleisha said she loved her niece so much and was glad to be called her aunt. She said Mia was her first niece, her brother’s first daughter, and her mother’s first granddaughter. Veleisha said she was so beautiful and she wasn’t sure if she should be sad or angry.
She wondered publicly about what she could have done differently and apologized that she wasn’t there to protect her little niece. She ended her grief-stricken statement with the question, “What’s wrong with my family?”
Phanthavongsa said this is like a living nightmare; she misses her daughter’s hugs and kisses. If McKoy wanted to kill her just do it but don’t threaten Mia who wasn’t aware of anything going on.
Phanthavongsa awakened on Monday morning to find the cowardly McKoy standing over her with a handgun. The police arrived just after he had shot his daughter and himself.
The jilted Colorado man halted his murder-suicide intentions long enough to post a picture of him and his beautiful daughter on FaceBook. McKoy shot his child in the head and then turned the gun on himself; but failed in his initial attempt to take his own life.
