Well known model and reality TV celebrity, Kim Kardashian, is selling her clothes on E-bay only to be cheap to charity. Once her items are sold 10 percent of the total earnings will be donated. She is doing this to raise funds for the Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines. More than 5,000 lives have been claimed by Typhoon Haiyan. This may seem honorable and generous to the public who are on the outside looking in. When you take a closer look, 10 percent is nothing when her items are priced extremely low.
Kardashian is receiving criticism from every corner of the world. This woman has so much money yet she can only spare 10 percent of her earnings to donate to charity? Talking about her E-bay items, Kim does mention that a portion of the proceeds will be going towards the International Medical Corps. The question remains, if Kim really wants to make a difference, why doesn’t she donate more of the proceeds? Instead of 10 percent Kim could easily donate 90 percent or even 100 percent. It is not like this Kardashian star is running out of money anytime soon. These proceeds are like pocket change to her considering how much money she actually has.
On Kim’s site she writes, “This is a special auction…a portion of the proceeds are going to International Medical Corps. The proceeds will go directly to the communities served in the Philippines.” Notice how she does not mention just how much of the proceeds will be going to the charity. Her statement was generalized to make herself look good in the public eye. Fortunately the public is beginning to see through Ms. Kardashian’s plastic smile.
This 33-year-old has a net worth value of over 40 million, yet she can only afford to give people in need 10 percent. People are critiquing her left and right for her actions but this may be getting the most critique recently. Kardashian does not know what it is like to have nothing therefore she does not know what price it can hold.
It is understandable that Kardashian possibly wants the rest of the proceeds to go towards her daughter North West, but isn’t that a bit selfish? Those people in the Philippines aren’t only hurting for money; they are hurting for food and clothing. What she could do is sell half of her clothes and send the rest to the Philippines for those who were left with nothing after the typhoon.
Considering the prices of her pieces for sale, that 10 percent will not add up to much. Her prices range from $.99 to over $1,000. This is good news for her fans but bad news for the people in the Philippines. It is a shame Kim cannot donate more to help those who have no home, no food, no water, no clothes, and some left with no family. The funds Kardashian will raise from her E-bay selling will help a little, but it would help a lot more if she wasn’t being so cheap about it.
