Dwight Howard may have had a not so pretty breakup with Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, but the star or his former team had only positive words to say before the Houston Rockets play host to the reunion between the parties. Kobe’s kind words to Dwight come despite the far from perfect experiences the two shared together in LA a year ago.

The star of the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant, is still rehabbing an Achilles’s injury that has sidelined him since the end of last year. Without Dwight and Kobe on the court, the Lakers look much different this season than they have in many years.

“I think he’ll have a great year,” Bryant said of Dwight. “He’s always very determined to be more of an offensive player. Here in Houston he’ll have the opportunity to do that. He always wanted to compete with some of the all-time greats, the Chamberlains and Shaqs and Olajuwons and so forth. This year should be the year where he starts putting up those kind of numbers — 25, 26 (points per game), stuff like that.”

The diplomacy used by Kobe in his comments regarding Dwight are somewhat surprising given the events of the breakup between the Lakers and the new star of the Rockets. Perhaps this is just Kobe’s way of turning the page and moving on from the Dwight Howard saga that plagued his team a year ago.

This is the first meeting of the Rockets and Lakers since the breakup, and is taking place in Houston. Kobe Bryant said that he will be around for the rematch of this contest, when Dwight Howard has to make his return to Los Angeles on February 19.

Kobe Bryant hopes his rehab will be over and he can take the court when Dwight Howard and the Rockets travel to LA to take on the Lakers in February.

“I hope so, barring any major setback,” Kobe said.

Somehow the diplomacy of Kobe Bryant towards Dwight Howard feels empty, there should be more fire spewing between the two. This Rockets-Lakers game should have had some flare to it, instead it just feels like something is missing. Hopefully that changes when the two play again in LA, this time with both men on the court.
