Alleged killers Elyett Barbour and Miranda Barbour have been arrested and charged with the senseless murder of 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara. The newlywed Barbour team stabbed and strangled LaFerrara last month for no other reason than a shared desire to kill someone, police said.
The alleged killers Elyett Barbour, 22, and Miranda Barbour, 18, were originally from North Carolina, but had recently moved to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. On November 12, police found LaFerrara’s body dumped in an alley in Sunbury; he had sustained an estimated 20 stab wounds and had been strangled with a cord.
The alleged killers seemed to have no problem confessing to the killing, and openly described the details to police. Initially, Miranda tried to deny that she knew LaFerrara; however, according to a police affidavit, cellphone records show that the last call to the victim came from Miranda’s number.
Elyett told police that he and Miranda had wanted to kill other times before, but their plots fell through, until LaFerrara responded to the online ad that promised him companionship with Miranda in exchange for money.
According to Elyett, Miranda had an online dating business through Craigslist and other websites. She would offer herself to lonely men as a non-sexual companion with whom to have talks and escort on strolls through shopping malls. Mrs. Barbour’s fees allegedly ranged from $50 to $850 for activities such as dinners and visits to the malls. Her husband claimed that all of her ads stated upfront that sex was not included in the deal and that he was in full support of her work because it did not involve sexual activity.
Investigators said that the Barbours drove to a mall on Nov. 11 to pick up LaFerrara; Elyett was hiding in the backseat of their SUV. Elyett told police that upon a signal from his wife, he wrapped a cord around LaFerrara’s neck. He restrained the victim as Miranda stabbed him repeatedly.
According to the affidavit, Miranda Barbour admitted that she met LaFerrara in Selinsgrove, and then drove with him to Sunbury and parked. Miranda stated that she had a knife hidden between the front seats. She claimed that LaFerrara “groped her” and put his hand around her throat and that’s when she took the knife and stabbed him.
The couple then drove to Sunbury and disposed LaFerrara’s body in an alley, where police found him the next day. Sunbury Police Corporal Brad Hare said, “It was pretty twisted.”
Police said that after Elyett and Miranda dumped the victim’s body, they went and bought cleaning liquid, bleach wipes, and towels to get rid of the blood inside the SUV; then they went out to eat. Initially, Miranda claimed that she had purchased the cleaning products after killing LaFerrara, after which she went and got her husband and treated him to a strip club. On Friday, Elyett Barbour told police that he purchased the products, which was accurate based on the store’s surveillance video.
According to reports, the alleged killers Elyett Barbour and Miranda Barbour, now under arrest for murder, are facing multiple criminal homicide and assault charges. Both are being held without bail.
