Anderson Silva, long one of the most dominant fighters in the UFC and once the middleweight champ, has suffered a devastating injury during his rematch with current champion Chris Weidman. During the second round of UFC 168 Saturday night, Silva delivered a low kick, which Weidman checked with his knee; Silva’s ankle appeared to break in half, bending to an impossible angle and sending the Brazilian fighter to the ground in excruciating pain. The referee called a stop to the contest after seeing the extent of the injury.
Weidman won the middleweight title by handing Silva a loss via knockout at UFC 162, putting an end to the longest reigning champion in the history of the organization. At 38, it is not known of Silva will ever fight professionally again after suffering an injury of this magnitude. Anderson Silva, the ex-middleweight champ, has lost his second rematch against Chris Weidman at UFC 168.
