There is no denying that Britney Spears is very loved by her fans. It is not clear why fans love Britney so much. It is, in fact, an anomaly which critics cannot fathom.
17-year-old Britney Jean Spears is seen sitting in a classroom, pencil in hand, tapping her foot against the desk. For millions of fans around the world, it was love at first sight when they were introduced to Spears in her Baby One More Time video. Dressed in a Catholic school uniform with the shirt tied up to reveal a midriff, pigtails, two pink fluffy scrunches and the provocative dance moves all created an image of innocence and sexuality. Her fans loved the contradiction. Britney’s debut album was released in January 1999 and sold over 10 million copies in one year.
When someone thinks of how much Britney Spears’ fans love her, the 2007 video of a supposed Britney fan tearfully appealing to the media to “leave Britney alone” comes to mind. The video was created by Chris Crocker, an internet celebrity, who creates videos of his short monologues. Though Crocker states that the video is genuine, it is undoubtedly a fake. But what it did was capture the essence of how Britney’s fans feel about her and displayed it for millions to see.
Britney Spears has had a rocky personal life, but through it all has managed to maintain her career. However, without such fans, Spears may not have had such a successful career. Her debut album, with its record-setting sales, has been labeled the “Best-selling album by a teenage solo artist” by the Guinness World Records, which also named Spears as the most searched person in the world. If based solely on album sales, Britney Spears may be known as the best-selling artist of all time.
Spears, who turned 32 years old this Monday, just released her eighth album. Her fans, of course, welcomed the album with open arms. Critics, however, panned Spears for promoting the album as her “most personal” yet, claiming there is no personality in it. This is disappointing for critics who wanted to get a glimpse of the real Spears. But Britney’s fans don’t need an album to know who she is; they have known it from day one.
Britney’s fans have an unconditional love for the singer, remaining by her side throughout her roller coaster life. They were witnesses in 2004 to her 55 hour marriage to Jason Alexander. They were also present when she married Kevin Federline some months later, after only knowing him for 3 months. Fans stood by Britney as they watched the media tear Britney apart for the marriage, making excuses for her. Then, when the marriage was over, they sorrowed with her. When her aunt died in 2007, fans mourned with her. They walked into countless rehabs with her, and shaved their heads when she did. They sympathized with her when she lost custody of her two sons. The cried with her and defied critics by stating, “Who cares if you think Britney is crazy, we will still buy her albums.”
