Colin Farrell wanted to marry Elizabeth Taylor and become husband No. 8 despite the fact that she had enough years on him she could’ve been his grandmother. The Irish movie star, 37, confessed his love for Taylor during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres on Monday. Taylor was 77 at the time.
“It was kind of like the last, it feels like in my head, not her, I’m projecting, but the last kind of romantic relationship I had. Which was never consummated,” Farrell, who won a Golden Globe for In Bruges in 2008, said.
The two stars met in Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles after Farrell bumped into Taylor’s entourage. Farrell was there for the birth of his second baby, Henry, while Taylor, a two-time winner of the Academy Award, was having a stent placed into her heart.
After returning home with his infant son, Farrell was wondering how Taylor was doing and called his publicist to ask if he could send Taylor flowers. His publicist responded by saying that he had recently taken delivery of orchids and a handwritten note from Taylor to Farrell. The exchange of flowers led to Colin Farrell visiting Elizabeth Taylor in the hospital and a romance that lasted 1 1/2 to two years, resulting in Farrell’s desire to marry Taylor.
According to Farrell, Taylor and he bonded due to the fact that neither one of them slept very well at night. He would call her in the early hours of the morning and the two would talk for up to an hour while everyone else was sleeping.
“I just adored her. She was a spectacular, spectacular woman,” Farrell said. “I wanted to be No. 8, but we ran out of road.”
Farrell has never married and is currently single and his attraction to older women is not new. When 28 years old, Farrell made a pass at Dame Eileen Atkins, who was 69 at the time. Although she turned him down, she said later that the “offer did me the world of good.”
In 2003, Farrell was named one of Pe0ple Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People.” Known as somewhat of a ladies’ man, Farrell’s past relationships include trysts with Angelina Jolie and Playboy playmate Nicole Narain. He has also been linked to Naomi Campbell, Rihanna and Britney Spears.
For Taylor’s part, she declared a love for both Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell before her death in 2011, saying that they were “both brilliant, nuanced actors with great range.”
Farrell stars in the upcoming movie Winter’s Tale with Will Smith and Russell Crowe. He is also seen in Saving Mr. Banks and with Jessica Chastain in the upcoming Miss Julie.
Taylor died in 2011 of congestive heart failure at 79 years old. One of the few non-family members to be invited to her funeral, Colin Farrell spoke of how much he missed Elizabeth Taylor, the woman we now know he wanted to marry. He also read the poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins entitled The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo, which was selected for Farrell to read by Taylor herself prior to her passing. Farrell later remarked that the poem was tricky and that “Even in passing she had me under the thumb, sweating bricks.”
