Duck Dynasty, the unique reality show about a country-dwelling family, has made headlines recently after Phil Robertson quoted the Bible in an interview, causing GLAAD to cry foul while christians silently twiddled their thumbs and watched the drama unfold. Phil’s quotes, given during an interview with GQ have caused GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) to speak out in condemnation about the Duck Dynasty star’s remarks.
In a recent edition of GQ, the patriarch of the “Dynasty” spoke out concerning his views on sin, and the result has been a media buzz and outcry from GLAAD denouncing his statements. In what now might appear as an attempt to stir up controversy, GQ asked the A&E star of Duck Dynasty about his views regarding sin. In response, Phil, who has referred to himself in the past as a Bible-thumper, responded unsurprisingly by quoting the same Bible he claims to regularly thump. Phil, in response to the question on sin stated, “start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.” He continued on to state, “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolators, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers – they won’t inherit the Kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
In typical Phil style, the head of the Duck Dynasty family did not stop short in expounding on his beliefs. Phil went on to use medically proper but glaringly direct language to describe why he felt heterosexual relations should be more appealing for men that homosexual relations. To explain why heterosexual relations might not be appealing to some, he simply stated, “sin: it’s not logical my man. It’s just not logical.”
The comments made by Phil, drawn out by GQ’s Drew Magerty, caused GLAAD to almost immediately cry foul, however the large christian population and viewership appears to be twiddling their thumbs and watching the entire fiasco play out. GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz in speaking to the press lashed out in response to Phil’s statements accusing Phil of misquoting the Bible and attempting to perpetuate “myths” and “lies” concerning the homosexual and wider LGBT communities.
In addition to the interview which was was almost certain to bring about controversy, as is now plainly evident, Phil is also known for issuing bold calls to repentance for all the world, saying in effect that if the world would show love to one another along with love for the Almighty and just repent, everything would work itself out.
Duck Dynast is the one-of-a-kind reality show that simply follows around a country-dwelling family, which made their mark on the public through their development and distribution of the wildly successful Duck Commander duck callers. The highlighted family, the Robertsons, are certainly a unique bunch of country-dwelling patriots who bring to reality television some characteristics not easily found these days in TV-land, patriotism and principles. It is the decision to speak out about some of those principles however that appears to have landed the patriarch of the Duck Dynasty family, Phil Robertson, in the middle of controversy.
If one lets roll a few of the Duck Dynasty episodes, the culture embodied by the Robertson family is such that the recent statements by Phil have not surprised regular viewers. The family is ultra-patriotic, with American flags showing up regularly in previews and episodes. In addition to patriotism, the Robertsons, especially Phil, are certainly not shy about their faith either. The episodes open and close with family prayer, complete with thanks given to the “Father in heaven in Jesus’ name.” This has been the norm now on the show, which aires on A&E, since its inception. This being the background of the Duck Dynasty family, specifically Phil who is now embroiled in a little controversy, the recent surprise at the comments made appears to be from those not familiar with the show. The comments made by Phil do not seem to represent any new ideological position for Phil, but it appears they were simply spoken a bit louder than usual and have garnered passionate responses from parties who have been offended by Phil’s remarks.
The network which aires Duck Dynasty, A&E, had initially remained silent on the issue, but due to the outcry made by GLAAD and the LGBT community the network has broken their silence regarding the matter. The network issued a statement which restated their support for the LGBT community, and went further to announce that Phil would be removed from the show for a yet-unspecified period of time.
The announcement of Phil’s suspension from the show does not appear as of yet to have been met with any significant outcry from christians who at least presumably believe in the same Bible that Phil referenced in his statements, and no such cry has come from viewers either. It remains to be seen whether significant support for Phil will be shown by viewers or the wider christian population at large.
For now what is known is that Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson has, yet again, quoted the Bible, causing GLAAD to cry foul while viewers and the christian community appear to be twiddling their thumbs and watching the controversy unfold.
Time will eventually highlight just what kind of fallout there will be as a result of the comments made by the Duck Dynasty patriarch.
