Far From Happy Christmas for Christians in the Holy Land

Far From Happy Christmas for Christians in the Holy Land The Christians who still live in the Holy Land face a Christmas that will be far from happy, merry or bright. They are a persecuted minority.

O Little Town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie…” This hymn, and dozens like it will be sung all over the world soon, as they are every Christmas. Cards depicting the scene of the holy birth will decorate millions of houses.  Nativities will be set up in homes, in shopping malls, in churches.  But as people prepare to celebrate the humanity of a man known as Jesus of Nazareth, his homeland is no longer a safe place to be for those who follow him.

There are 14 million Christians throughout the Holy Land but they are a rapidly dwindling minority. Many of them are so desperately vulnerable that they feel they have no choice now but to emigrate. In Iraq alone, since the fall of Saddam, a startling two-thirds have fled.  Since 2003 at least a million have left. Most of them went to Syria. Now they face a second wave of displacement as they are no longer protected there.  There have been reports of rape, murder and attacks directed at them and the Christian community lives in terror.  When they feel they have to run for their lives they head for Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. It is said that the ancient Syrian Armenian community has all but gone.

Egypt has seen churches being burnt and anti-Coptic rioting. In Gaza and on the West Bank, Christians are caught up in chaotic uncertainty. To be Christian in the Holy Land, the birthplace of Jesus, is to live in fear.  The Vatican has confirmed as credible the estimate that 100,000 Christians are killed every year for their beliefs.

Historian Tom Holland has noted how deeply ironic it is, that two devoutly Christian leaders, George W. Bush and Tony Blair, brought about, inadvertently, the final demise of Christianity in the Middle East by invading Iraq. Now the Arab Spring has proven the final knell, as Christians are all too easy targets for extremists and are living in dire jeopardy.

The major Christian celebrations are still national holidays in Syria, and this is testament to the fact that Syria has long been a sanctuary for Middle Eastern Christians.  One of the oldest parts of Damascus is the Christian Quarter at Bab Touma.  Islamic and Christian communities used to live side by side in such ease, that sacred spaces were shared.  There was ethnic and religious tolerance, mutual respect and understanding.  Now, along with so much in Syria, that harmonious co-habitation has been ripped apart.

Speaking about his deep concerns for the beleaguered Christians of the Middle East, has been HRH Prince Charles. At an inter-faith reception he said he is very troubled by what he calls the “intimidation, false accusation and organized persecution” to the Christian faith communities.  It is a problem affecting Syria, Egypt, Palestine and Iraq as well as other Arab countries. The prince says it is no longer possible to turn a blind eye to the targeting of these Christians by “fundamentalist Islamic militants.”

The birthplace of Jesus and the founding site of Christianity now has less than 4 percent of Christians making up the entire population of the Middle East and North Africa;  a number that has dropped dramatically over the past 100 years.  Prince Charles sees this as a great threat to possible peace in these regions as Christians are renowned for their bridge-building capabilities.  He himself had been trying to build a bridge between Islam and Christianity for the last 20 years, but these efforts have been beset by those with “vested interests” in destroying them.

The prince’s bridge-building metaphor is set in stone above a mosque in the Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri, south of Delhi. The mosque is an astounding piece of Muslim architecture. Yet over the arched gate which leads to the interior, is this inscription:

Jesus, Son of Mary (on whom be peace) said: The World is a Bridge, pass over it, but build no houses upon it. He who hopes for a day, may hope for eternity; but the World endures but an hour. Spend it in prayer, for the rest is unseen.”

Both the Mughal Emperors Akbar and Jehangir were devoted to Jesus and Mary. They did not see this as at all at odds with their Muslim faith.  Esteemed historian, William Dalrymple, an expert in the Middle East, has explained the archaic connections between the two religions, more united in similarities than in difference.

The sayings of Jesus, such as this one, make up hundreds of references in ancient Arabic literature. They originate from a variety of sources, some from early Christian texts like the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas, some from the four canonical gospels, and others from oral tradition. Curiously, Islam has retained these where Christianity has not.

These sayings, Dalyrymple reasons, “fill out and augment the profoundly reverential picture of Christ painted in the Koran.”  It is only his divinity that is questioned. Mary has more mentions in the Koran than she does in the entire Gospels and is in fact the only woman ever given her proper name therein. She is held, as is Jesus, to be a “model for Muslims.”  The old Mosaic laws, like circumcision, are accepted in Islam, as is a great deal of both the Old and the New Testaments.  This is hardly surprising, Dalrymple reminds us, when both Christianity and Islam grew from the same culture of the ancient world of the Middle east.

A 16th century painting of a nativity scene now in the British Library symbolizes this.  Mary is in the center with the baby Jesus on her knee. Yet she leans on an Indian throne and is attended by Mughal servants. The three wise men are dressed as Jesuits.  There is no stable, no cattle lowing, no shepherds and no sheep. This is because Islamic lore contends that Jesus was born under a palm tree beside an oasis. Therefore, in this painting, Mary sits under a palm outside a haveli, all the better to reach up and pluck fruit whilst she is in labor.

This picture, combining the two traditions, is many hundreds of years old.  It shows that the celebration of the birth of Jesus was long accepted as a subject of common ground. Indubitably there are differences, but the history of Islamic-Christian relations has long, respectful roots.

The profound concern of the Prince of Wales about the persecution of the remaining Christians in the Middle East has been supported by Prince Ghazi of Jordan. He has said that Christians were in the Middle East 600 years before Muslims. Indeed, he went on, “Arabs were perhaps the first non-Hebrew Christians in the world and became Christians during Jesus Christ’s own lifetime.”

Pope Francis has also expressed his worries. In a tweet under his Twitter handle of @Pontifex he wrote, “We cannot resign ourselves to think of a Middle East without Christians. Let us pray every day for peace.”

Pray for peace seems an apt response at this time of year when “Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All Men” is the primary message of hope. For the Christians of the Holy Land, facing a Christmas that will be far from happy, it is all they can do.

the author is clearly an uneducated fool. He mixes up the holy land with the middle east as if they are one and the same. The holy land is the land of Israel. the middle east is made up of many countries including Israel. The article claims there are 14 million christians in the holy land. There are less than 10 million people in the entire land of israel. Notwithstanding the numerous mistakes in this article, I don’t follow all the comments that blame jews for the persecution of christians. Apparently they forgot that for almost 2000 years the christians persecuted jews killing millions of them, culminating in the holocaust. The only reason christians have any access to their holy sites in israel is because the jews protect them from the muslims who would just as quickly kill christians and jews.

This is a recommendation to the editor, if you are going to put a photo of a church in your article and show it has been attacked and ruined … you should always put a caption under the photo to identify location and name of church. Your article will gain credulity if you put a name , city and date behind your photo.

As an American, I wonder where my great and glorious leader Barack Hussein Obama is on the killing of Christians across this world. I guarantee he would be screaming for tolerance and peace if Muslims were being killed in these numbers. At what point do Christians just need to arm themselves and fight back? Or are we already there?

A fake jewish guy said they don’t believe in the Devil (and obviously not God either… because they believe they are God)… My response to him was above.

I read all of what Donna posted below. It is all true. My wife was going to marry a fake jewish guy a long time ago and the rabbits, I mean rabbi’s, wanted her to take an oath that she did not believe in Jesus Christ and would forever denounce him.

She said i would never make that oath and they were mad at her. Anyways, she didn’t make the oath and ran as far away from the fake jew as possible.

Holy Land? Where is the Holy Land? It is not on my map. Using the words Holy Land shows the distortion of this story and the bias of this story. The writer alludes to Israel but calls it the Holy Land. Well Israel is a country although the Arabs and this writer will not acknowledge it. And Bethlehem is run by the Arabs, not Israel. Christians live peacefully in Israel and always have. I have been there and seen that with my own eyes. There is a photo of the desecration of a church but no identification of where this church is. What is written here are half truths, They are written to create a division between Christians and Jews. Don’t believe these lies. Yes, Christians are having problems in the Muslim countries. We have read about this in the past. In those countries, you are either Muslim or dead. There is no tolerance. This is Jihad and not the peaceful Muslims that are religious and good people. I don’t know this paper but I won’t read it ever again.

I suggest you read Discovering Judaism by Michael Hoffman. That may help get your fact straight. Judaism is a religion of the Pharisees and is antichrist and it’s Talmud even admits as much. This does not mean that we must despise Jews. What it means is we must reach out to the Jews and point to the teachings of Christ.

Oh please. I don’t know who this Michael Hoffman is, but anyone can publish a book. I’m Orthodox Jewish and respect Christians and their beliefs. It doesn’t mean I need to be a Christian or you to be a Jew, it just means to respect each other’s beliefs without necessarily having them for one’s own, which Jews do, despite what your Mr. Hoffman might write. If Jews have any views of Christians, it is that Christians should be good Christians and Jews should be good Jews. Period.

            Donna,

accurate quotes, however, you would do well to align each “false statement” of the sages with references right in Tanach to each subject that would show the Talmudic and Sanhedrin Council sages to be of questionable character…as if Tanach directly contradicts the Sages…it is the sages they are to reject , not Tanach/Torah!

To my fellow Y’huden.G-d’s Word through Moses and the Prophets shall NOT fail…men will fail, sages and prophets will fail, and when they do, they are deemed false sages and prophets…how have you neglected the higher (Torah/Tanach) for the lower (Talmud/Kabbalah)? Could it be that Tanach is correct when it says, Hashem will close our eyes and ears so we are ever listening, but never hearing, ever seeking, but never seeing, and he will cease to hear our prayers and turn to the goyim? Isn’t this obvious? HaShem also lays out the cure, repent and return to him, and he will once again be our G-D and we will be His people. Believe Tanach…the rest will follow.

Today Jews don’t read the Tanach to hear G-D, today Jews read the Talmud to get sages interpretation of G_Ds word. Try reading it Like Isaiah 53, or MIcah 5…..where the Moschiach is told to be everlasting…no man is ever lasting…only HaShem is everlasting..the moschiach will come as man/G-d, the Christians have it right, but only because Tanach has it right and our eyes and ears have been closed…we live in the time of the goyim…but one day HaShem will open our eyes and ears…read your Tanach…even if you don’t understand it..read it…its ALL there!

Today’s (observant) Jews do read the Tanach…as well as the chumash, rashi, the mishnah, the Talmud. Today’s jews read it all. This is why we have proper perspective while most others read bits and pieces to fit their personal agendas/ideologies.

Israeli persecution of Christians in the Holy Land:

    • IW December 23, 2013 at 11:34 am

There is no Israeli persecution of Christians. It comes from the Moslems who are xenophobic and intolerant of anyone who is not Moslem. Anyone with eyes to see can see that in the pages of any day’s newspaper. This 60 Minutes piece is just anti-Israel political propaganda. If the Palestinians wouldn’t have blown up buses in Jerusalem’s streets, killing men, women and children by the HUNDREDS in the middle of peace talks where Israel was discussing giving them their state, there would have been no wall. In any event, Christians are under pressure from Islam, not Israel, and everyone knows it despite CBS’s fear of saying it.

CBS is not telling the Christians in the video what to say; they are saying those things about Israel themselves. And there would have been no violence at all from the Palestinians if the Jews had not violently removed them from their land. When you use bombs against people to achieve your greedy goals, don’t be surprised when when they are used against you in retaliation.

Give me a break. The US deports plenty of immigrants, but that’s okay because only Jews are worthy of your moral superiority. If you could emerge from your cocoon of ignorance and Israel-bashing, and actually visit the West Bank, you’d see that most of the Jewish settlements are nowhere near Arabs, but rather are settling on empty land–Jewish ancestral land, I might add. They displace no one, but it’s the Arabs who can’t stomach the thought of a Jew living on “Arab land”. Meanwhile, a million Arabs live within green-line Israel–20% of the population. Jews lived in Hebron for 2700 years until in 1929 their Arab neighbors turned on them and murdered them. While Arabs have murdered and ethnically cleansed, no one is kicking Arabs out, except in your Israel-hating imagination.

Ha ha please, the US hardly deports any immigrants because Jews are the ones that stop us from doing that, all under the guise of “racism” and “xenophobia,” while the Jews in Israel deport them by the thousands to protect their own “racism” and “xenophobia.” The Jews are nothing but hypocrites.

Islam has some similarities with Chistianity because it was developed six centuries later in the same region. However the Koran is largely ignorant of the details of the biblical texts as Muhammad was illiterate. He confused characters and stories and blended them- for example, the mother of Jesus in the Koran is actually Mary Magdalene as Muhammad got his “Mary’s” mixed up. Much of the Koranic text is biblical sounding, but ripped from proper context and historical setting and altered to fit a partucular agenda. Then it has the gall to claim it is actually the Bible that is corrupted and not trustworthy.

As for peace, Muhammad himself went to war against the Jews and Christians and instructed his followers to continue the Jihad. There have been times of relative peace, but that is not what the Koran instructs nor what Muhammad lived.

Islam and Christianity do NOT have more in common than in difference. That is a very ignorant statement. Nearly every biblical story, character and truth is distorted, changed or contradicted in the Koran. The god of the Bible and the god of the Koran are polar opposites.

The bigotry and unthinking fascism of you Judeophobes is not only appalling on its face, but works against a solution to the objective and very real problems Christians face in this part of the world. Do you honestly think muslims would be okay with some Christian sect bastardizing their bastardization of Talmudic and Biblical texts? Do you think if they altered Mohammed’s words to make him seem normal and decent that muslims would accept this as doctrine?

Then don’t paint Christians as somehow being ignorant of extra-biblical works. They are non-canonical for good reason. Textual criticism has kept heresy out of the church for hundreds of years, and they are no fools who do the work.

Maybe you should research your subject material a little better before your next submission’s due.

The few acts of vandalism can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and are far less than you’d find on religious institutions in the U.S., for example. Christians are fully respected and have all their rights–there are Christian and Muslim members of Israel’s parliament enjoying full civil and religious rights which would be the envy of anyone.

I admire like the Jewish people I have met in my life. They are among the most interesting people I have encountered and very bright. It’s nice to see they are accepting of Christians in Israel. We are both people of the book. The Judeo-Christian link is very real. Real Christians do not blame the Jews for the death of Jesus. The Bible says that any one of us may have turned on Jesus and cites examples of Jesus’ closest followers turning on Jesus in His final hour. These were Christians! They were Jesus’ own closets friends. And they denied they even knew Jesus. To focus on the idea that some (but not all) Jewish leaders acted against Jesus is missing the whole point of the Bible. We have all lived beneath the standard that our Father expects and none of us is worthy of living in Heaven with Him. The difference between Jews and Christians is that the Jews believe the Savior will return once, to be King. We Christians also believe this. But we believe that He came once before, as a willing sacrifice for our sins. He suffered. Next He will reign with a fair and righteous hand. He will rescue Israel from its enemies and He will establish His kingdom in Jerusalem. We both believe in the same Messiah.

From the Sanhedrin trying to silence Peter and John to the murder of Stephen to Fetus trying to silence Paul and the murder of the Apostles and Saints we have been warned of and promised this persecution. Roman Emperors, barbarian hordes, mohammaden pirates, socialists and hedonist of every stripe have made war against the Church from the beginning to this very day. Horrible crimes are perpetrated against the Saints in India, China, Asia, Africa.
So rejoice and give thanks–this IS the persecution Christ told of us. Those who hate Him will have those who follow Him. Do what you can for the Saints under far worse persecution than we suffer–so far.

Iraq is part of the Holy Land? I thought from the headline that the article was going to talk about the actual Holy Land in Israel. Notably, the author failed to talk with even one Arab Christian from the Holy Land. Had the article included even one conversation with a Christian from Bethlehem, we would be reading about how oppressive the Israeli occupation is to Arab Muslims AND to Arab Christians.

I’m an Israeli Christian who lives in Haifa and me and my friend are all going to enlist to the Israeli army because we want to be part of this country that gave us so much after we saw what had happened to all Christians in the middle east – Syria, Iraq and Egypt – very unfortunate

You are not addressing my point. I am talking about the thousands of Arab Christians who live in Bethlehem and other areas of the West Bank. They live under the Israeli occupation which is just as harmful to the Arab Christians as it is to the Arab Muslims in the West Bank.

The Christians in Bethlehem, or those few that are left anyway, live under Arab Muslim occupation. That’s not a synagogue that dominates Manger Square these days. The “Israeli Occupation,” as you call it, is no more harmful to Arabs who do not promote violence (Christians don’t promote violence BTW. How many of those Bus Bombers have been Christians do you think?) than the TSA is to you if you want to fly to Chicago; ab it annoying but that’s it.

Wrong again, Dave. Bethlehem is under the Palestinian Authority’s jurisdiction. Jews have a very hard time getting in there for that reason. the pressure on the Christians there comes entirely from the Moslems, despite your wet dream fantasies. They are as “under occupation” as you are.

But based on what I have heard personally and in the media from Palestinian Christians, the occupation deprives them of basic rights as well. Can you really say with a straight face that the decades-long Israeli military occupation harms only the Palestinian Muslims and not the Palestinian Christians?

I know of none who have committed acts of violence against the Israelis. With all the acts of violence over there, surely some of them would have been perpetrated by Christians if they had the same mindset as the Muslims. But they don’t and they haven’t.

Find out how many four-year colleges there were in these “occupied territories” before 1967 and compare to how many there are now.

Find out what the percentage of the Bethlehem population was Christian before and after the Muslims took over there in 1995.

The Palestinians are not deprived of “basic rights” except for the ones they have forfeited by their own violence (checkpoints, etc.). If they could bring themselves to live peacefully in the proximity of a Jew (which they can’t, obviously), there would be no checkpoints and they could run their own lives. I live in this part of the world, and I can tell you firsthand that no one is interested in lording it over the Palestinians. Israel occupies the West Bank because they won it in a war started by the Arabs. Jews live there as a matter of right. Arabs live there, and they live within Israel too. So I’ll tell you with a straight face that the military occupation doesn’t harm anyone that is not a threat, whether Moslem or Palestinian. I have plenty of Palestinian neighbors who live peacefully and they enjoy exactly the same services and rights that I do. Just walk around Jerusalem and see.

I am not sure that bigoted remarks are appropriate here (e.g., Palestinians are incapable of peaceful existence). Also, I think you are confused – you say that Palestinians are incapable of peace, yet later you say that you have peaceful Palestinian neighbors. Confusion and ignorance are not a good recipe for thoughtful expression.

I do not know your citizenship, but as an American, the occupation and control of another people depriving them of liberty and property is incompatible with my beliefs. Such control is also not compatible with my Christian belief in respect for all.

Its unfortunate that Christians will fall under the boot heel of Islamists unless and until they start being a little more like their persecutors. Its nice, preferable even, to turn the other cheek when you can but there comes a point when you have to roll around in the mud with the pigs if you want to survive. That time is now and Christians worldwide need to get a little more militant about their religion.

As tempting as that is, we would be disobeying a direct command from the Lord and thereby make matters worse. “Vengeance is mine, saith the LORD; I will repay”. Like some have already pointed out, being able to “turn the other cheek” is a sign that one is a genuine follower of Christ. We are expected to lay down our lives for His name’s sake.

brands this as a propaganda piece. Even American Christians have noted
the Israeli persecution of Christians and confiscation of historical property

It’s sad, sad for Christians that so many like you do not realize that Bethlehem has been under Palestinian government control for decades now, that ever since that has been the case Christians are fleeing the birthplace of Christ, fleeing for their lives from Muslim intimidation. They live in fear for their lives not from Israel. As a Christian you have forsaken them in favor of lies. Wars, Rumors of war, famine, pestilence…. these are the signs of early pains. Christians everywhere are distressed with the evil that is increasing worldwide. The media shows us some examples in the Middle East, and to a lesser extent it is everywhere, even in our own neighborhoods. Christians need to see this world imploding from God’s point of view and be at peace. Satan is allowed to have his last effort before the return of Jesus; it is what we are today witnessing in this the last generation. Do not be anxious over wars and violence; but be READY when there is suddenly peace declared on earth (a false peace) as antichrist will have arrived as the false messiah, false imitator of peace. Soon thereafter, the reason for Jesus appearing two thousand years ago will become evident as His second coming arrives.

Unfortunately, the ‘Allah’ of the quran bears little resemblance to God, the Father. In Surah 3:54, Allah calls himself “the greatest of all deceivers.” On the other hand, God, the Father, neither deceives, nor can He be deceived. There is a reason that the Church, on initial inspection of Islam some 13 centuries ago or so, declared Islam a heresy. While we can pray for the conversion of Muslims, we must be wary.

I think you must mean within the Middle East itself, since Americans don’t generally study Middle Eastern history. Instead, we think of the Moors in Spain, for example. Or the Turks in Eastern Europe. Though it is true that in Bulgaria they say 50 years of communism destoyed the Orthodox Church that had lasted through 500 years of the Ottoman Empire.
