Jack White and British model Karen Elson are now officially divorced. A Nashville judge signed their divorce papers Nov. 26. The couple married in 2005, and both decided to formally end the marriage in 2011.
Jack White, former singer for The White Stripes, will maintain ownership of his music businesses, The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, Dead Weather, and his own record label Third Man Records. Elson will have primary custody of their two children and White will see them 150 days per year. White will not be required to pay alimony but will pay child support and health insurance.
White and Elson married in June 2005, after meeting during filming of the video “Blue Orchid,” for a White Stripes album. They decided to end their marriage on a high note, just after celebrating their sixth wedding anniversary, according to White, “with a positive swing bang hum dinger.”
But what would have been an amicable divorce ended with Elson filing a restraining order in August against White for his violent temper and harassment through emails and text messages. They were apparently fighting over the issue of custody of their children, who are now 5 and 7. White reportedly wanted to spend more time with them but Elson allegedly feared for her and her children’s safety because of White’s harassment, and called White unfit to care for their children. Jack White apparently has a history of bullying Elson, and was jealous of other musicians he felt took advantage of him, according to court records, which mentioned the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach.
But Jack White did not go quiet after the restraining order. Instead, he retaliated against Elson, saying her allegations of his violent nature were lies. He refused Elson’s request that he seek a psychiatric evaluation although he did undergo anger management in the past, after assaulting a singer in 2003.
White makes the list for SPIN’s 25 Most Memorable Quotes of 2013, ranking #23. This quote is from a heated email to Elson regarding their children going to the same school as Auerbach’s children:
“That’s a possible 12 fucking years I’m going to have to be sitting in kids chairs next to that asshole [Auerbach] with other people trying to lump us in together. He gets yet another free reign to follow me around and copy me and push himself into my world.”
Other break-ups and divorces in 2013
- Actor Peter Facinelli (Nurse Jackie, The Twilight Saga) and Jenni Garth divorced after 12 years of marriage. They have three children together.
- George Clooney and Stacey Kiebler ended their relationship after two years. (Kiebler didn’t really think she was going to marry the Clooney, did she?)
- Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humphries after 72 days of marriage. Humphries reportedly felt defrauded by the marriage but did not want a long, drawn out court battle with her because he “felt sorry for her.”
- If you didn’t know it, Henry Cavill and Kaley Cuoco had barely started dating when the public got wind of their romance. So they ended their relationship a mere 12 days after everyone found out about them.
