Kate Winslet has given birth to a baby boy. Like many celebrities, the name has been a thing of speculation for the media and fans. Would she choose a normal or unusual name? Again, like many celebrities, Winslet chose an unusual name for her newborn son: Bear Winslet.
The Titanic star gave birth to her son on December 7 at Sussex County hospital in England. He joins his half-siblings, Mia Honey and Joe Alfie. The family is now back home together after just a few days in the hospital.
Bear is the first child for Winlset and husband, Ned Rocknroll. Rocknroll, Richard Branson’s nephew, was originally called Abel Smith but legally changed his name.
Instead of taking his father’s name, the couple decided that the newborn baby would inherit Winslet’s surname. Both Mia and Joe are from different fathers—Winslet’s previous ex-husbands. Both her older children have taken their fathers’ surnames. Winslet explained that with only one male in her family, who has no children of his own yet, it has led to the possibility of nobody to carry on the name. She is proud of it and wanted one of her children to inherit it.
The 38-year-old actress announced her marriage this time last year, which happened in secret. Just six months later, they announced the pregnancy. She was around three months along at the time.
The unusual name chosen by Winslet and her husband for newborn son, Bear, is the most unusual among all celebrities in 2013. However, they are not the first celebrity couple to name their child this. Alicia Silverstone named her son Bear Blu, and the English celebrity adventurist was named Bear Gryllis.
Winslet has been at the center of news surrounding children lately, after the campaigners, Fathers4Justice, made her part of their most recent campaign. After stating that her children lived with her—and not 50/50 with her ex-husbands—the campaigning fathers created a campaign stating that fathers deserved to be part of their children’s lives. It surrounded the Christmas holidays, where many separated families have to choose between one or the other—and usually the mother.
The 38-year-old Hollywood celebrity involved her solicitors when she found out about the recent campaign. Even her 10-year-old son’s father, Sam Mendes, became involved in the discussions when he slated Fathers4Justice for their actions involving his family. He stated that he does support the rights for fathers, but that does not mean his family should be the center of their campaign. While his son lives with Winslet, Mendes explained that it is not due to the reasons stated in the protesting dads’ campaign.
The campaigners are known for their highly publicized stunts.
Rocknroll and his wife are now planning Christmas at home for the whole family. Winslet now joins a long list of celebrities who have chosen unusual names for their newborn sons and daughters. Some of those include David and Victoria Beckham’s Harper Seven, Gweneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s Apple, and Joel Madden and Nicole Richie’s Sparrow James Midnight.
