Kim Kardashian, what does the world see in her? There is obviously something interesting about the 33-year-old reality television personality, model and entrepreneur. She routinely battles Beyonce Knowles-Carter for the title of Most Searched Celebrity, although she did lose to Beyonce this year. It would probably be a safe bet that those are mostly image searches, but a search is a search.
The unquestionably ravishing beauty is something of a mystery, in that it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what her fame is predicated upon. The reality starlet broke onto to the scene as part of the celebutante tsunami that included billionaire-heiress Paris Hilton and her then-BFF Nicole Ritchie. Hilton and Ritchie, much like Kim, have no readily definable talents, aside from gracing magazine covers. Nicole Ritchie doesn’t even really have that.
None of them sing (not really), act (not really), dance, write or truly qualify as independent entrepreneurs. None of them fall into the traditional, read pre-reality TV, concept of what celebrities are supposed to be.
So, what does the world see in Kim Kardashian? Well, we saw an awful lot of her in the sextape that truly catapulted her onto the world stage. The graphic episode that she shared with R&B crooner Ray J, and most of the World Wide Web to boot, was Kim’s first introduction to most people, and as far as celebrity sexual escapades are judged, it did not disappoint.
Perhaps it is her curvaceousness, exotic features and penchant for hooking up with other celebrities in brief and dramatic trysts that enchants her followers. Or, it could be her eccentric and ever-present family, with whom she has come to share the spotlight.
All of Kim’s reality-television shows incorporate permutations of her now-famous clan into them. The primary, and original, show Keeping up With The Kardashians, features the entire family; Kris, Bruce (Jenner, who was an Olympian and in fairness was famous in his own right before the show), Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall, Kylie plus the husbands of the oldest girls – Scott Disick, Lamar Odom and soon, presumably, Kanye West.
That seminal show has spawned several spin-offs. Kourtney and Kim Take New York, Kourtney and Kim Take Miami, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami and Khloe and Lamar. In addition, matriarch Kris Jenner has parlayed her reality-show fame into a talk show of her own, and the youngest girls, Kendall and Kylie have launched modeling careers.
Kim Kardashian was involved in a public relationship with New Orleans Saints footballer Reggie Bush, and then in 2011 she had a high-profile marriage to NBA baller Kris Humphries, with the wedding being a featured episode on the reality show. The couple would file divorce papers a mere 72 days later, which caused many to wonder if the whole thing had been a publicity stunt, which Kim denies.
In 2012 the cable network E! signed the family to a three-year deal worth a reported $40 million. The show is in its eighth-season.
So what does the world see in Kim Kardashian? I am not sure anyone is qualified to give a precise answer to that question, but it seems that we are all destined to see a lot more of her in the years to come.
