The 21-year-old “Wrecking Ball” singer and former Hannah Montana star opened up to Barbara Walters while filming a segment for the yearly ABC News special, Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013. Cyrus is one of the most fascinating people of 2013 along with Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence, whistleblower Edward Snowden, the Duck Dynasty clan and Kim Kardashian with Kanye West.
Cyrus may appear to live her life as an open book but she was tight-lipped about the breakup with Hemsworth. They were together for four years, and became engaged in 2012, but it was not to be. She says she realizes she may have been too young, at 19, to become engaged and make such a serious commitment. Although she admits she did love her gorgeous diamond engagement ring.
Cyrus tells Walters, “I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think, conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year. ” She admits she was in a rush to become engaged and she was not ready to settle down. She is appreciating the quiet moments in her life right now: ” I wait for those moments of silence, when I’m just at my house, by myself.”
The Barbara Walters special will air on ABC Dec. 18.
Miley Moments of 2013
Who can forget the infamous MTV VMA performance with Robin Thicke? Cyrus decided to go all out and wear a skimpy flesh-colored two piece, touching herself with a foam finger and twerking with Thicke, and slapping the butts of her dwarf team members, who wore bear costumes. She had also had a dramatic haircut, shaving the sides of her hair and putting up baby pigtails on top of her head. Cyrus’ performance was the most tweeted event of the year.
Cyrus spanking her dance team’s butts didn’t go over so well with the dancers themselves, especially Hollis Jane, who was reportedly embarrassed at being spanked after the MTV performance.
Hey, mental illness is nothing to laugh at but Cyrus decided to throw that in singer Sinead O’Connor’s face in a tweet after O’Connor wrote her an open letter about the dangers of fame and to be careful where she was heading. Cyrus brushed her off, saying she was busy rehearsing for her guest stint on Saturday Night Live. Still, O’Connor said she would be available for her if she needed to talk, and that is when Cyrus poked fun at O’Connor’s bipolar disorder.
The public wondered what was up with Cyrus’ constantly stuck-out tongue. She laughed it off and said, “My tongue comes out as I keep having mini-strokes.” Naturally, the comment didn’t sit well with those who had had strokes, and related stroke organizations. Luckily, her Saturday Night Live guest spot bombed in the ratings, which is when she made this comment.
Drugs were part of Cyrus’ year, also. She got a lot of heat when she lit up what looked like a joint at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Amsterdam. Apparently, she prefers smoking pot to drinking alcohol. Parents of Cyrus’ fans aren’t keen on the message Cyrus is sending.
