Could this be a case of “Do as I say, not as I do” when it involves President Barack Obama, immigration, and any person of interest in the President’s life? At least that is how it appears on paper now. If one happens to be related to President Obama, and currently living in the U.S. illegally -and want to remain a resident- apparently dropping Obama’s name may tip the scales. Obama’s uncle, Onyango “Omar” Obama, an illegal alien from Kenya, may continue to reside in the US, as ruled by US Immigration Judge Leonard I. Shapiro, today in a court in Boston.
According to the Freedom of Information Act, in 1986 and 1989, the President’s Uncle Omar was to have been deported back to Kenya. He fought it and lost the appeal in 1992. Then, in 2011, Uncle Omar, still residing in the US and living in Framingham,MA, was arrested on charges of drinking and driving. The question of deportation resurfaced, even as the DUI case was dismissed after Omar concluded a one-year probation sentence and paid fines.
This morning, 69-year-old Obama arrived at the US Immigration Court for a deportation hearing. During the hearing, Obama mentioned the President’s name and was awarded the right to remain in the US permanently with a newly issued green card. Allegedly, name-dropping was not the only deciding factor in the case. According to the federal judge, since Omar had already been living in the US for the better part of 50 years, and was “a gentleman, a good neighbor” and paid taxes, he qualified for legal residency.
A federal immigration law allows immigrants to apply for residency only if they lived in the US since before 1972. In the case of the President’s uncle, Omar came to the US from Kenya in 1963 via a student visa, with the help of Barack’s father. The visa expired in 1970. Omar testified that he had obtained a Kenyan passport a few years ago and had not obtained any other US Immigration rights under the law.
According to The Boston Globe, Obama’s uncle testified that he does have a nephew and that this nephew is United States’ President, Barack Obama. At some point, the White House asserted that President Obama had never met the uncle, but Omar testified that Barack did in fact lived with him for three weeks in the 80’s while still a student at Harvard Law School. Omar graciously thanked Judge Shapiro for ruling in his favor and granting him permanent U.S. residency.
So, now that Obama’s uncle is no longer an illegal alien, and may continue to reside in the United States. According to reports, the President apparently knew this unlawful tidbit about his uncle. Does this event revisit the question of the President’s true birth place? Should the President be cited for harboring an illegal alien? Furthermore, what is to stop anyone else in this country, without the highly-placed family connection, from following the President’s example and doing the same for their illegal alien family members?
