The Advocate reports that Good Morning America host Robin Roberts has come out as gay earlier today. Roberts posted a letter on Facebook which thanked her longtime girlfriend, Amber Laign, saying that Laign was an important part of Roberts’ support team as she battled breast cancer five years ago and then a potentially life-threatening disease called myleodysplastic syndrome in 2012.
Roberts also thanked her sister, Sally-Ann, who donated life saving bone marrow for Roberts’ bone marrow transplant, which Roberts underwent in 2012. It has now been one year since the crucial 100-day post-transplant “window” in which more complications can arise from that procedure. Roberts says she is grateful for her year of good health and thanked her “longtime girlfriend Amber” in the note. This is the first time Roberts has publicly acknowledged being a member of the LGBT community.
Her note read, in part:
I am grateful for my entire family, my longtime girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together. I am grateful for the many prayers and well wishes for my recovery. I return every one of them to you 100 fold.
CNN reports that Laign is a massage therapist and that she and Roberts met about ten years ago, when they began dating after being introduced by mutual friends. In her note, Roberts also said that in addition to being grateful to Laign and her sister Sally-Ann, “I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health.”
It’s being reported that Robert’s co-workers, friends and family have been aware of her sexual orientation for many years, although she never chose to make her private life public until today. Many of Roberts’ fans and fans of Good Morning America have taken to social media channels to cheer her decision to come out as gay.
Celebs and fans alike have been burning up Twitter congratulating Roberts on her decision to acknowledge her orientation in public. Ellen DeGeneres Tweeted: “Good morning, America! Congratulations, @RobinRoberts.”
Roberts’ colleague Howard Bragman posted on his personal Facebook page, “Proud of my dear friend and colleague Robin Roberts @RobinRoberts for an amazing recovery and for living her truth. Amber Laign is an amazing woman and they are an awesome couple.”
Roberts also told her Facebook followers in her note that she wanted them to reflect upon what they were grateful for this past year.
From time to time when celebrities come out, some question why those celebs decide to make their private lives public. For the LGBT community, visibility is very important. Experts say that as the LGBT community becomes more visible, the idea of someone being gay becomes more ingrained in the mainstream and thus, more accepted. Studies have also shown that when LGBT people come out and have family support, they will enjoy a myriad of health benefits including a reduction in stress and an improvement in their overall health profile.
That’s certainly good news for Robin Roberts. The Good Morning America host has publicly come out as gay and thanked her girlfriend, so she will most likely enjoy increased health for herself. Besides experiencing improved health and reduced stress, Roberts will provide another positive role model for LGBT teens and increase the overall visibility of LGBT community.
