As 2013 comes to an end, a very thankful Robin Roberts posted a message on Facebook thanking her fans, her family and her longtime girlfriend for their support. The message was the first time Roberts has ever mentioned having a girlfriend, thereby admitting that she is gay.
Roberts is a 53-year-old anchor on ABC’s Good Morning America. She began contributing to the program in 1995; and, in 2005, became a co-anchor. During the period before becoming a regular on GMA, Roberts contributed to ESPN.
In 2007, Robin Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer. Five years after combating and beating cancer she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). MDS is a collection of blood-related conditions that is characterized by ineffective production of certain classes of blood cells. Robert’s doctors believed that she developed the disease because of chemotherapy she received while fighting cancer. According to Roberts, her doctors gave her a good chance of surviving the disease because of her active lifestyle and good health. In 2012, Roberts took a leave of absence from GMA in order to receive a bone marrow transplant from her sister. She returned to the show shortly after.
Roberts certainly has a lot to be thankful for this year. With supportive friends and family she has overcome not one, but two illnesses.
Robert’s Facebook message which was intended to be a “thank you” message, but ended up being a “coming-out” message, also served to dispel rumors linking her to another woman.
There have been many rumors in the past concerning Robin Roberts’ sexual orientation. One such rumor linked her to a woman by the name of Storm Sahara. Storm Sahara is supposedly a fashion stylist and film director. According to gossip site MSTARS, on June 18 an insider wrote a letter to the site reporting that Ms. Sahara and Ms. Roberts had gotten married. The letter claimed that the couple had tied the knot on June 1, 2013.
The letter described the ceremony as being small and involving only close family members and friends. There was also talk that the supposed couple was making plans to adopt a child and publish a tell all book. The relationship was rumored to have lasted 5 years.
Though Roberts never confirmed the nuptials, inspirational tweets made by Sahara on her Twitter account fed the rumors.
According to the New York Daily News, Robert’s girlfriend, Amber Laign, is a licensed massage therapist. Ms. Laign owns her own practice, which specializes in injured patients going through recovery.
According to gossip site Rumor Fix, Amber and Robin have been dating for the past 10 years. The couple was introduced by mutual friends. There have been photos of the couple together, most of the time in the company of other people.
ABC News issued a statement supporting Roberts through the site BuzzFeed. The statement recognizes that ABC was well aware of the relationship and continued the statement by offering the love and support for the coming year.
Roberts closed her message on Sunday stating, “On this last Sunday of 2013 I encourage you to reflect on what you are grateful for too.” Tens of thousands of fans have shown their support by “liking” the message.
