Apple CEO, Timothy D. Cook, announced big plans for a big Apple year coming up in 2014. He sent an email to Apple employees that was like an end-of-the-year Christmas letter one might send to friends. He reflected on the past year. He mentioned some notable Apple accomplishments. He talked about new products to look for, as well as humanitarian and corporate initiatives.
The punchline was nothing too unexpected though. He did say to look out for big news. That was announced at the 9to5Mac.com website. The entire content of that email can be read at the website.
In an email he said he wanted to reflect on the company’s accomplishments throughout the past year, discussing a wide variety of subjects including product releases, humanitarian efforts, and corporate initiatives. Cook also made statements looking toward the next year, stating that Apple has “big plans“ for 2014. The full email has been posted by 9to5Mac.com. The following is a summary of that text.
The first paragraph: The first paragraph of the email was about how magical the holiday season is this year because so many people around the world are experiencing Apple products for the first time. People at Apple work hard, and he wanted to review what they had accomplished together.
The second paragraph: They sold a lot of iPhones and iPads. They also announced the 50 billionth download on the App Store, which exceeded expectations.
The third paragraph: Apples means more than products. The company believes in doing business in many ways and is especially proud of its many philanthropic efforts and donations. Apple is one of the biggest contributors to (PRODUCT)RED, supporting the Global Fund in its fight against the spread of AIDS in Africa.
The fourth paragraph: Apple supports workplace protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It is also committed to helping the environment.
The fifth Paragraph: Big plans are coming for 2014 that Apple customers will love. He is the luckiest person in the world to be CEO of Apple.
In addition to the expected developments, such as an iPhone 6 and a new and improved iPad, after lots of talk there is an iWatch on the way, and that sounds like Dick Tracy futurism coming to life.
These kinds of vague pronouncements of good tidings are par for the corporate course. This was a little unsettling for some reason. Maybe it was too perfect. There is no use reminiscing about Steve Jobs and his struggles in the early days. It’s not Timothy D. Cook’s fault. There are few things in the American economy as exciting as a promising business startup. For better or worse, Apple is no longer in that stage.
Well, hearing about Timothy D. Cook announcing big plans for a big year for Apple in 2014 left me wanting to know more.
This made me wonder what kind of guy is Timothy D. Cook?
A little online research quickly revealed the following:
Timothy D. Cook likes for people to call him ’Tim’.
This means he is down to earth.
Tim was named the CEO of Apple on August 24, 2011, succeeding Steve Jobs.
This means he is successful.
In early 2012, he was awarded compensation of 1 million shares, vesting in 2016 and 2021, by Apple’s Board of Directors. As of 2012, Cook’s total compensation package of US$378 million makes him the highest paid CEO in the world.
This means he is enormously wealthy.
Tim has been called the ‘most powerful gay man in Silicon Valley and he was named to Out Magazine’s Power List of the 50 most-powerful LGBT people this year. Out is a popular gay and lesbian fashion, entertainment and lifestyle magazine, with the highest circulation of any gay monthly publication in the United States.
This means he is out about being gay and highly respected in his field, and in the nation at large.
On November 3, 2013, Cook published an editorial in the Wall Street Journal in which he advocated for immediate congressional passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
This means he stands up for what he believes in even if it might seem controversial to some people.
Timothy D. Cook, as did Steve Jobs before him, believes that intuition is the most powerful secret to being successful. The ability to follow one’s intuition and back it up with hard work – that is what separates the sheep from the goats.
If he is philosophically aligned with Steve Jobs, this means he is all right.
So, to summarize, Tim is down to earth, enormously wealthy and successful. He is an out and highly respected gay man who stands up for what he believes in no matter what anyone thinks, and he is philosophically aligned with Steve Jobs.
What is the verdict on Timothy D. Cook and Apple moving into 2014?
Timothy D. Cook has indeed announced big plans for a big Apple year in 2014. All the stars, planets, and ducks are lined up. Timothy D. “Tim” Cook is solid as a rock, Apple is in good hands, and one might predict that next year’s Dick Tracy iWatch will be one of the coolest things that happens in the lives of Apple geeks, tech geeks, and gadget geeks everywhere.
