Tony Rizzo Arrested – Cleveland Sports Voice Reportedly Choked and Hit Wife (Update 911 Call)

sports, tony rizzo, the riz, arrested, cleveland, sports, wknr

Tony Rizzo is Cleveland sport’s go-to voice. He is the guy people tune into for the latest updates and heartbreaks of the Cleveland Browns and other sports teams. Today the influential radio and television host was arrested after a 9-1-1 call was made by his wife Friday night. She asked for help from her husband who was choking her and hitting her in the face. This came as a shock to thousands of fans. Further yet is some fans are not that shocked. Rizzo had a temper.

Sources who knew Rizzo stated he could fly off the handle when he got into heated debates, especially about sports. In 2011 Rizzo was hosting The Really Big Show radio segment and was chatting with a caller. The call was surrounding the continued losses of the Cleveland Browns and well it got pretty ugly. Check it out below:

Rizzo has been connected to “passionate” outbursts previously. Is it just easy excitement or something darker? There is such a thing as passion, yet it is another whole level when it comes to arguing leading into the red-zone anger mode. Rizzo seems to step into that arena when it comes to proving his point. It appears when the call came into 9-1-1 last Friday, the Riz (as he is known) had been drinking with his wife. This could be the factor for Rizzo’s response of losing it and reportedly choking his wife and hitting her in the face.

The Medina police report states Catherine Rizzo locked herself in the bathroom and called 9-1-1.  Catherine stated Rizzo was “really hurting” her and she was “really scared.” The dispatcher inquired to how Catherine was being hurt. The scared wife replied “Choking me, hitting my face.” The dispatcher confirmed with Catherine if alcohol was in play. Catherine stated it was and explained Rizzo had been banging on the door, until he heard she was calling police. Then she relayed a chilling factor.

“There’s a gun upstairs.”

911 call from Catherine Rizzo

Rizzo was arrested at 10 p.m. Friday night and charged with one count of domestic violence. Fans are taking to the airwaves and social media to relay their level of disgust at the long-time sports jockey who should have known better. Calling long-time sports fans who have commonly watched The Rizzo Show on Cleveland’s Fox 8 channel showed a genuine sense of disgust.

I have been watching Riz for so many years. My grandkids met him and we find out he’s nothing more than an abusive monster? I don’t care how much you drink, you know damn well when you are hitting on a woman! -Ruth B., Cleveland

Wow, that is sick. You know what though it isn’t that surprising. Rizzo tends to run his mouth to the point of breaking. Sorry to hear about Cathy though, that ain’t cool. – Devon T., Cleveland

More people chimed in with similar sentiments. Basically, Rizzo has lost a lot of fans today in the wake of this mess. Surprisingly, he did appear on his radio segment for his 4-hour show. At the end, he stated he would be at work tomorrow and it seems WKNR, for now, is supporting their popular sports jock and released the following statement.

We do not believe it is appropriate to comment on Tony’s personal life. Tony is an exemplary teammate and member of the community and his status with us is unaffected.

Considering television and radio personalities have been commonly released for stunts outside of work, it will be interesting to see how WKNR handles the feedback from the public. Domestic abusive is never a matter to sweep under the rug and any actions Rizzo committed Friday will have an effect on his career. Will fans be comfortable calling in to shoot the breeze on sports? Tony Rizzo is out on bail, Guardian Express is awaiting further confirmation regarding future court dates. For now, Rizzo is reportedly charged with one count of domestic abuse for choking and hitting his wife in the face. Rizzo’s attorney has entered a plea of “not guilty” for his client. The Rizz is remaining quiet on the matter, only advising once he did nothing wrong. Stunned? Surprised? Feel there’s two sides to every story? Comment below.

it is o.k. for sport talk show host to talk about people in sports, but when it is one of them in the local media they do not say much, if anything at all.what a bunch of sorry guys.

Spin it any way he wants, hitting a woman is never acceptable. If 850 does not take action I will refuse to listen to their station in the future. I also intend to contact every advertiser and tell them I will not purchase from them as long as they continue to support domestic violence against women by advertising on Rizzo’s show.

Uh oh Rizz, you make John Shaver sick to his stomach you shameful weasel.

Tony is a great guy don’t rush to judgement here people.
They were both drunk. They probably were fighting about who want to kick Arron Goldhammer’s a$$first!!!

I’m a fan of the show. He needs to not be judged before the evidence is presented. I guess we will find out if Russo, Rosalina is really a good law firm or not.

Remember that physical marks are not necessary to be convicted of Domestic Violence in Ohio. If she felt threatened enough to call it in, there was probably a reason. Typically one doesn’t lock themselves in a bathroom for fun. It’s for protection. He has a history with alcohol, and now potentially with abuse. His gig on Fox 8 will be done either way, they will no longer want to attach their brand to him, and if KNR is smart, they will follow suit. Sponsors will be dropping off fast. HE, no one else, ruined his reputation with his super ego, and his reckless conduct.

They didn’t get rid of Kenny Crumpton after his drinking and driving incident. Shows what moral standards Fox 8 has. As long as Rizz makes them money, they will keep him around. They did it for Kenny C.

To be clear, I don’t believe domestic violence is a thing to be ignored; however, I feel like using his rant on the Browns is misguided and irrelevant. Mad about football vs. Domestic violence? Not comparable in the least. If it were a fair analogy, ninety percent of men would be in jail for psychotic outbursts. I know I would. It’s just not fair. It’s also unfair to demand his job (to those who are). Personal lives are personal. Professional lives are, well, professional and, in this instance, more public.

I am very glad WKNR made a decision to take him off the air today. I got sick to my stomach when I realized he was on the radio yesterday. Regardless of guilt or innocence which obviously I do not know I think for now it’s best to keep him off the airwaves

Guilty or innocent, the awarding of the Patrolmen Norman A. Drew Memorial Citizen Of The Year to him this year will most likely be tarnished.

Eric you hit it perfectly. Whatever the outcome – it still will be a smear.

He is a douche bag … plain and simple !

  13. Marcus Graham   December 9, 2013 at 6:07 pm

Guilty you can see that in his eyes & it will be a damn shame if he is able to keep his gig @ ESPN after beating the stuffins out of his wife

Don’t rush to judgement on Tony people, from what I understand he was drinking and so was she. There are a lot of women that will make a false claim and just get CRAZY when they drink and get mad, I know, I had one. They will go to any extreme to make themselves look like the victim. Lets see a picture of her face if she was so beat up. It will all come out, but don’t rush to judgement, that’s where the media is wrong for forming opinions without knowing all the facts. Anyone can call 911 and make a claim, and in Ohio once a domestic call is made someone has to go to jail, its the law.

Familiarity with the word “reportedly” is usually advised. No one accused him in this article. This was reported via a 911 call, and one of his own stations reported the information today through Fox 8. It’s an ugly situation and as more information comes along, it gets updated. Of course he hasn’t been found guilty, he was just arrested on Friday and released – his court date has not been advised at this point. Thanks for the comment.

  16. Klo   December 9, 2013 at 4:08 pm

Irresponsible reporting for sensational journalism. He has not been found guilty at all. Horrible injustice of the media to report in this manner.

  17.   December 9, 2013 at 3:32 pm

If Tony is guilty of what he is accused of, there is definitly NO excuse for it, and I’m sure the consequences will be harsh. That said, I heard that on-air tirade you are suggesting shows a pattern of behavior and quite frankly I think it was a ridiculous addition to this article. Anyone who listens to the show regularly knows that Rizzo has those manufactured blow-ups all the time. It’s called entertainment, which is what he is paid to do. It was definitely longer than normal but, he was making a point, illustrating the frustration of Cleveland Browns fans. Radio hosts do this sort of thing all the time, and to suggest that screaming over a sports argument is evidence of ones likelihood to abuse a woman is irresponsible. I am a fan of the show and I was dissapointed to hear of this news. To me it seemed completely out of character but, goes to show you that we really know very little about the personalities we follow in the media. I hope that we find out that this event did not play out as we have read so far but, I expect that won’t be the case, and I think that sucks. But, I hardly think that someone’s opinion of his on air behavior is reason to convict him on the spot.

I can agree with that to a degree and I really appreciate your comment. I am a long-time Clevelander and have followed Rizzo for many years. It was very disappointing to hear the news, but honestly he blows up to some crazy levels at times. Sure we all get heated – but some of his outbursts are extreme. It seems his attorney is pushing for a not guilty plea, so have a feeling more will be revealed as time continues, which is sad. No matter show this shakes down Rizzo’s rep gets hit. Thanks again for the comment!
