Amanda Knox Is Found Guilty

Raffaele Sollecito and Amanda Knox have once again been found guilty in the murder of Meredith Kercher. Her sentence is now 28 ½ years. Sollecito has received a new sentence of 24 years. The Italian court in Florence, Italy, had made the decision after 12 hours of deliberation.

The gruesome murder of  Meredith Kercher, Knox’s roommate, occurred in 2007. Knox and her one-time boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were first convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and brutally killing Meredith Kercher. The murder was said to have started out as a drug provoked sex game. It is alleged that the game took an extreme turn and went too far.

Meredith Kercher was a 21-year-old student from Coulsdon, located in the United Kingdom. She was an exchange student who attended Leeds University. Knox and Ms. Kercher lived in the same house in Perugia, Italy.

When the body of Meredith Kercher was found by police, she was only half-dressed. Her throat was cut. Her body had over 40 knife wounds.

Knox and her boyfriend were questioned. Police said that Knox had confessed to being home but also falsely accused Patrick Lumumba. Mr. Lumumba spent two weeks in jail before being released. After his release, he filed a lawsuit against Amanda Knox for libel and won.

Rudy Guede had also been there that night. He had fled to Germany and was stopped at a train station. He was then extradited to Italy. Mr. Guede confessed to being at the house the night of the murder but insisted that he did not kill Meredith Kercher. His original conviction held a sentence of 30 years. An appeal granted him 16 years in prison.

Amanda Knox was found guilty during the first trial. The verdict was overturned on appeal in 2011. She was free to leave Italy. Knox has been living in Seattle, Washington, since. She has said that going to school and writing were keeping her busy. The new verdict of guilty has once again shattered her way of life.

She has sworn that she will not go back to Italy calmly. Her reaction was one of tears, fright, sadness and disbelief. Her sentence is four years longer with this conviction. Italy cannot arrest her again, but it can request an extradition.

The United States has an ongoing extradition treaty with Italy. It remains to be seen if the Italian government will pursue this. Knox and Sollecito have said they will appeal this conviction.

Amanda Knox was not in the Italian court to hear the verdict that she has been found guilty. However, the Kercher family was in court. The case has been extremely frustrating for them. An attorney for the family stated that they are tired of the trial taking so long. They just want justice for Meredith. Lyle Kercher, Meredith’s brother, has said that it is hard to come to terms with any feeling because of the possibility of another appeal in the future. They cannot celebrate the guilty verdict. The family has stated that no matter what the outcome is, there is nothing that can bring Meredith Kercher back.
