American Idol Former Contestant Arrested for Masturbating

American Idol Sam Atherton

American Idol adds another crazed contestant to the list, as one contestant, Sam Atherton, had been arrested for masturbating in public. Atherton has some skeletons in his closest he was probably hoping would have never came out. Back in 2010 in Massachusetts, Sam was arrested for open and gross lewdness due to the police report. Allegedly Atherton was serving lemonade out of a truck to a group of people just heading out of church and their kids. One witness had said they saw Sam’s head bobbing wildly back and forth and had an extreme look on his face. When approaching the vehicle the witness saw Sam’s pants around his ankles.

Sam Atherton was a contestant on American Idol on Wednesday, performing what some would say a very questionable act. The former contestant was sarcastic with Keith Urban, one of the judges, and the performance was not worthy of mention. The judges discarded the contestant as soon as the song was over. He stormed out of the room immediately after and stated he had more talent then Keith Urban, J-Lo, and Harry Connick Jr. combined. That’s pretty high praise for himself, considering he didn’t make news from American Idol, but for being arrested for masturbating.

There have been many crazy auditions and multiple performers who have flipped a gasket after being denied to move on in American Idol, but it is hard to remember when a former Idol contestant has a background like this. From some of the most interesting contestants, Like Mary Roach having some voices talking to her inside her head, or and the angry backlashes after some of the most outlandish performances on the show. There is also the crazy stalker Abdul had that committed suicide outside Abdul’s home. From old to new, the drama never seems to avoid the show, but continues to draw the viewers’ attention more.

While not everyone can win on American Idol, there have been a few lucky contestants that have moved on and create their own brand of success. Guys like William Hung and Larry Platt who may have made legends out of their names with their quirky yet appealing auditions. Meanwhile, Chris Daughtry and Adam Lambert have gone on to make names in the music industry and gain fans’ attention in their own unique way. Chris Daughtry and Adam Lambert both grossed between $4-$5 million in 2012, proving stars do not have to win to capitalize in the music industry today.

One would doubt that Sam Atherton will make a name for himself from the American Idol. Even more less appealing to the audience now knowing parts of his background history. Executives and music industries have been known to use artists’ background to help appeal to the fan base and sell records, but executives may bypass Sam Adherton’s after being arrested for masturbating in public, since it is not exactly legal, nor exactly ethical. The former American Idol contestant may have to search elsewhere to make a name for himself.
