Police say a 58-year-old Colorado teacher, Randy Majors, has been seeking topless photos from some of his female students at the Fruita 8/9 school in Mesa County. He was arrested earlier this week and is now facing eight felony counts relating to the sexual exploitation of minors. Following his arrest he was released on bond and remains free while awaiting his next court appearance on Jan. 10.
Majors reportedly sought the topless photos of multiple students. Police first became aware of his alleged crimes when the mother of one of his students came across Facebook messages from the teacher directed to her 16-year-old daughter requesting that she send him some secret nude shots more than a month ago.
As a part of their investigation Colorado police seized Majors’ laptop computer. They report that the teacher was brazen enough to continue asking for topless photos of his students even after they had taken his laptop and questioned him about his behavior. Police say he has confessed to requesting the photos from several female students.
The female students identified thus far as having received the disturbing requests from their teacher range in age from 15 to 17-years old. Police report that multiple online conversations between the girls and Majors have been identified. The need for secrecy was allegedly stressed repeatedly by the Colorado teacher in the conversations. The conversations also reportedly feature Majors virtually begging for the photos as he told told one young student that he was “dying” to see her breasts. At least one student, a 17-year-old appears to have sent a photo of herself to Majors, though she was reportedly wearing a tank top in the shot. Another student reportedly called Majors out on his “inappropriate behavior” but apparently to no avail.
Majors has been on paid administrative leave from the Fruita, Colorado school where he has taught and coached tennis since 1994, since the first accusations against him came to light. A district spokesperson has said that the school is investigating the matter as well and that Majors will be fired if the allegations against him prove to be true.
Majors isn’t the first Colorado teacher to find himself in hot water over the past year. Last spring a 23-year-old math teacher at Overland High School in Aurora, Colorado, Carly McKinney, lost her job after she reportedly posted racy pictures and discussed smoking marijuana on her Twitter account where she went by the name “Carly Crunk Bear.”
She was dismissed after school officials reported that some of her tweets revealed violations of school policy. Those tweets included one indicating that she was high while grading papers and another in which she claimed to be in possession of marijuana on school grounds.
Though no inappropriate conduct with students was alleged in McKinney’s case, another of her tweets read “Just got called Ms. McCutie. Points for being clever, however, you are still jailbait.”
The Cherry Creek School District where Ms. McKinney taught reports that they do provide teachers with social media training and suggest that teachers “treat social media as if being in a classroom.”
Perhaps Majors would have been wise to heed that advice as well, as the Colorado teacher’s of social media to seek topless photos of his students has now led to eight felony counts against him.
