Dave Madden, the actor best known as portraying Reuben Kincaid, the aggravated band manager on the 1970’s comedy The Partridge Family has reportedly passed away at the age of 82.
Madden was born Dec. 17, 1931 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada and his early childhood was spent growing up in Michigan. In 1939 he was sent to live with an uncle and aunt in southern Indiana after his father passed away.
When he was at the age of 13, he had a severe bicycle accident which caused him to be immobilized for many months while he regained his health. During this time, Madden found he had interest in doing magic tricks. He later began doing magic in comedy routines that he began putting on all around the small Indiana town in which he lived. He graduated from high school in the year 1950, and in the past four years, he had acted as something called a “joke editor” of his high school newspaper. He wrote all the material for his column. Madden went on to take one semester of college at the Indiana State Teachers College, but decided it was not for him and dropped out.
He went straight to enlist in the United States Air Force in 1951 and was sent to Libya. There he discovered he found himself a hit as a comedy entertainer in camp shows. When he got out of the military, Madden attended the University of Miami, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in media communications in 1959.
He packed up and moved to Los Angeles and received his first taste of national attention playing a sad sack on the show Laugh-In from 1968 to 1969. However, when he became Reuben Kincaid, the agitated manager in the show The Partridge Family, that was where he really gained fame and the media spotlight.
After that Madden also made many different guest appearances on numerous other television shows such as Happy Days, The Love Boat, Bewitched, Love American Style, Fantasy Island and Starsky & Hutch. He also had a recurring role on the television hit Alice as a regular customer named Earl Hicks that came to Mel’s Diner and was also the basketball coach of Alice’s son Tommy. His last guest TV appearance was on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.
In 2009, he decided to publish his memoirs, Reuben on Wry: The Memoirs of Dave Madden.
Madden was married to Nena Arnold and they adopted a daughter named Selena, and had a son named Peter Michael. The couple ended up getting a divorce in 1985. He later got back together with and then ended up marrying his prior college sweetheart Sandy Martin.
Dave Madden died on Jan. 16, 2014 in Florida, where he was presently living with his wife Sandy. It is being reported by Madden’s former agent that the former Partridge Family star passed away from both kidney and also congestive heart failure following a long illness.
It is sad to repeat the news that Dave Madden, who was best known as portraying band manager Reuben Kincaid on The Partridge Family, has reportedly passed away at the age of 82.
