An explosion at the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) in the City of Pickering on the shores of Lake Ontario a short while ago, has led to the establishment of an emergency evacuation zone.

It is understood the explosion occurred in a building and was the result of methane gas building up. No injuries have been reported.

Initial reports say that the Pickering Fire Service is on the scene and will be using trucks to pour water over the building.

WPCP is owned and jointly operated by two regional municipalities, York and Durham. It is known to be a vital component of the Sewage System in this area.

According to the local police department, the first 911 calls were received around 9.20 am. None of the roads in the area have had to be closed.
