Movie production giant Harvey Weinstein left room for no assumptions or ambiguity when he described the next project he plans to undertake with actress Meryl Streep. Weinstein says he is going to make an anti-NRA movie called The Senator’s Wife and according Weinstein it will not shy away from any of the major polarizing aspects of gun rights debate and will apparently rip the NRA.
Weinstein’s declaration comes only weeks after two of the most bizarre and terrifying shootings in US history, one involving a boy only 12-years-old and the other involving a 71-year-old retired police officer.
On The Howard Stern Show Weinstein opened up about his next project. “I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take [gun ownership] head on. And the NRA is going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them,” he said on the radio station, clearly moved.
Early reports say that the movie will depict the NRA’s attempts to stop legislation that was proposed after the shootings that took place in Aurora and Newtown. Apparently the legislation was attempting to expand the background checks that are made on new gun buyers. The movie will depict the campaign and the effective “robocalls” that the NRA used to kill this legislation.
President Obama had already called these tactics dirty intimidation measures and “lies,” but Weinstein wants to bring all of this to the big screen where millions of Americans will have to confront these issues.
Weinstein, who has always been known for being highly political, appears especially concerned with gun laws in America. “As much as I want to ignore it, as much as I want to go on with my regular life, I can’t do it this time,” he said.
Weinstein also went on to say that although Streep is known to be a fiercely political actress, she is an actress playing a part in this movie. He says that it is not her belief being exposed in this movie, although her own opinions probably closely match Weinstein’s, and that it is his responsibility. “All the heat should come my way,” he said and he added that he is used to the kind of treatment that will no doubt be the result of this movie.
Weinstein lives only twenty minutes from Newtown, Conneticut where the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting took place, clearly a large motivating factor to his desire to rip the NRA.
So far there has not been confirmation on who wrote, or who will write, the script or who the director will be. With Weinstein in charge however and with this much passion apparently coming from him to the project, movie goers can be assured only the very best will be appointed to this story.
Streep and Weinstein are up for many Awards at this years Academy Awards for their movie August: Osage County. With Weinstein’s recent passionate quotes detailing how he wants to rip the NRA in his next movie The Senator’s Wife, the real buzz surrounding these two might be what they do next, not what they have already done.
