Marvel has announced its decision to cast Michael Douglas as the scientist Hank Pym for the highly anticipated movie Ant-Man, according to multiple US reports. The news made headlines just a couple of days after the Golden Globe Awards, when Michael Douglas was announced as the winner for Best Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries. The star humbly accepted the award for portraying Liberace in HBO’s Behind the Candelabra by thanking his crew, family and wife, as well as complimenting his costar Matt Damon on stage.
This will be the first Marvel movie for Michael Douglas to take a role in. Yet the exact portrait that Hank Pym will take by Douglas is shrouded in secrecy. Hank Pym masqueraded under the guise of many names, and is known to have a history of mental health disorders and domestic problems in the Marvel universe. Hank Pym is more widely known as a scientist who discovered the Pym particle, which are capable of shrinking or growing people from the size of an ant to an elephant.
Controversy centered around Pym’s character in the 1980s when he slapped his partner Jaet van Dyne, aka The Wasp, in a blind moment of rage. The audience cast a moral disavow towards the character by Marvel fans after the scene. Due to this, reports have circulated that Marvel Studios is trying to avoid using the original Ant-man wearing a suit.
Marvel also reported that Paul Rudd, who was originally confirmed to play Ant-Man, will now take on an alternative version of the character named Scott Lang. Lang was originally portrayed in Marvel Comics as a burglar who absconded the Ant-Man technology in an effort to save his daughter, and was later approved by Pym to be deemed a superhero. In earlier reports, Douglas was appointed to play a villain in the film; however, this remark has since been dis-confirmed.
Micheal Douglas reports that his motivation to play the infamous Ant-Man was to compliment his decision to take the role of the theatrical pianist Liberace in Behind the Candelabra. The actor also expressed that he has been interested in playing in a Marvel movie for quite some time. The scripts are entertaining, the director is great and the actor’s son, Dylan, loves the Marvel movies, Douglas reported in a recent news release.
Marvel’s is happy with its decision to cast Douglas as the new Hank Pym. “We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life,” president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige recently reported.
Ant-Man is a super hero on par with the Hulk, Iron Man and Thor in the world of Marvel. The revival of Ant-Man is sure to stir excitement in Marvel fans everywhere. The specifics of the plot remain under tight security by Marvel Studios, however. Given the sixty-nine year old actors age, rumors suggest the plot will be fixed around Ant-Man’s later years. The film is scheduled to be released July 31st, 2015.
