Michelle Obama will be celebrating her 50th birthday on Saturday, and according to The Chicago Tribune. Those invited are advised to practice their dance moves, wear comfortable shoes, and eat before arrival. Further details about the bash are kept under wraps, including the guests, but looking at her past history with the likes of two powerful women, Beyoncé and Oprah, and the fact she is the First Lady, it can be expected to be quite the star studded celebration.
The 2012 book, The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House by journalist Edward Klein explores the famous rift between Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama based on interviews with people on the inside.
In 2007, when Oprah announced her support for Obama during the campaign trail, her ratings began to slide from 74 percent to 66 percent, and naturally the number of people not in favor of her rose from 17 to 26 percent. However, Oprah stuck with her endorsement and it is estimated that her support helped net Obama 1,015,559 votes to decide the primary election.
She had a powerful influence on Obama, and through this her relationship with the First Lady apparently began to sour. Prior to an interview with Michelle Obama, Oprah found herself having to go through a second party with questions instead of directly to The First Lady, which was nothing short of a slap in the face to the philanthropist once thought to be a friend. It was revealed one of Michelle’s advisers, Valeria Jarret, saw Oprah as a threat to the power of Michelle Obama, and Michelle was aware of this, seeing the influence that Oprah had on her husband.
The book went into further detail on the souring relationship between two of the most powerful women in the U.S. It was only until last week, out of the blue, that things seemed to be changing.
According to the Huffington Post on Jan. 06, after a two-week vacation to Hawaii, only The President and their two daughters, Malia and Sasha, returned back to Washington. Michelle Obama had apparently stayed in Kula, Maui, at Oprah’s 17-acre estate. No confirmation had been made, but a biker told Maui news that his routine ride was blocked by policeman and secret service agents. TMZ also reports that many complaints were made by neighbors because of all the road closures to protect the First Lady.
Many photos of Obama and Oprah were taken in 2007 during the campaign trail. Not much has since been reported on Michelle Obama and Oprah coming to terms with each other. The bash on Saturday may see things change, showing the world that there is nothing but love between Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.
Beyoncé is known to be a close friend of Michelle Obama. The First Lady herself told People Magazine if she she could trade places with someone it would be the golden haired bootylicious music star. However, such as her relationship with Oprah, much controversy would follow her friendship with Beyoncé, with many supporters claiming it was bad for her image.
In 2013, Beyoncé recorded Bow Down with some controversial lyrics, and wore a tacky bodysuit with faux nipples at the beginning of her Mrs. Carter Tour. Advisers saw this as being a contradiction to what Michelle Obama should strive to be – a role model.
Nevertheless, Michelle Obama has apparently maintained her friendship with Beyoncé. The last time the star performed at the White House was for President Obama during his first inaugural ball, singing At Last by Etta James.
Though nothing is confirmed, it is highly likely she will be present due to her friendship with the Obamas. Beyoncé’s spouse, Jay Z, who is also a friend with the President, may even make an appearance too.
