A western Pennsylvania man has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of child rape, sexual assault and child pornography-related charges after images he recorded on a tablet computer were found by the woman he sold it to at a flea market. She reportedly found the disturbing material while attempting to take some pictures of her daughter with her newly purchased device. He remains in county jail on $150,000 bond.
43-year-old Donald Miller of New Castle, Pennsylvania was identified after the purchaser presented the images to police and informed them that she has purchased the tablet computer the previous weekend for $225 at an Ohio flea market. She identified the seller as the man present in the images contained on the device and said that he had told her that he was from New Castle. The tablet computer reportedly contained multiple photographs and a total of seven videos showing Miller engaging in sexual acts with an 8-year-old girl.
The police reportedly used Facebook to track Miller down and were able to locate what they believed to be his residence. Upon searching that residence they were informed that just a few days earlier he had been forced out of the residence by a woman at the home. Miller reportedly surrendered to police of his own volition upon learning that they were trying to locate him in relation to the child rape charges.
The home that police searched was boarded up and deemed uninhabitable by authorities due to the lack of heat in the residence and sewage reportedly backed up throughout the basement.
The 8-year-old girl depicted in the images on the device has also been identified by police and has been removed from her home and placed in the care of the Lawrence County Children and Youth Services. Her relationship to Miller has not been disclosed at this time.
This isn’t the first case of an alleged child rape to be discovered as a result of recordings stored on an electronic device.
Just last fall, a daycare worker from Elyria, Ohio was similarly caught when video of her engaging in sexual conduct with a child entrusted to her care at ABC Kidz Childcare was discovered on a laptop computer at her home. Further police investigation revealed the existence of a total of at least four victims, all between the ages of one and two.
25-year-old Heather Koon was living with her boyfriend, James Osbourne, a registered sex offender. When police came to check on Osbourne, they reportedly found an unregistered laptop in his home that contained the images. Both Koon and Osbourne were arrested and charged.
Koon faces four charges of rape in addition to various kidnapping and child pornogaphy charges. Osboune is reportedly looking at indictment on more than 50 charges relating to the case, though the nature of those charges has not yet been publicly revealed. Koon has claimed as a part of her defense that she was only acting at the request of her boyfriend, Osbourne. She is awaiting trial and could spend the remainder of her life in prison if convicted.
