It was no surprise that Sandra Bullock took home four People’s Choice trophies on Wednesday, January 8. The awards show aired on CBS and it was clear that the 49 year-old film star impressed everyone with her performance in Alfonso Cuarón’s space thriller Gravity. Her trophies were not just for her dramatic appearance opposite George Clooney against the backdrop of outer space, which she won Best Dramatic Actress for, she also won in three more categories.
She shared another Gravity win by getting the Favorite Movie Duo award with her co-star Clooney. Bullock also got the nod for Favorite Movie Actress and Best Comedic Actress. The actress’s presence in The Heat along with Melissa McCarthy ensured that it won Favorite Comedy Movie. The performer’s four gong win made her the overall leader with Justin Timberlake and Iron Man 3 coming a close second with three awards apiece.
Robert Downey Jr helped Iron Man 3 pull in its third gong by taking Favorite Action Movie Actor for his portrayal of the metallic hero and the film won its own trophies for Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie. Sandra Bullock taking home four trophies at the People’s Choice Award was the big news of the night, but, at least one other female performer made a splash at the show without taking home multiple awards.
Ellen DeGeneres set a new record for bagging Favorite TV Host yet again with her win’s equalling 14 in total. The 55 year-old entertainer and talk show host is the first woman to win that many times on the People’s Choice Award’s ceremony. DeGeneres joked that she could understand winning the award 12 or 13 times, “but 14?”
Despite the popularity of Downey Jr in Iron Man 3 and his subsequent win for best action movie actor, Johnny Depp was voted as Favorite Movie Actor even though his role in the box office bomb that was The Lone Ranger left critics less than impressed.
George Clooney did get a nod by sharing the Favorite Movie Duo with his Gravity co-star, but, he did not pull any further trophies on the night. Favorite Horror Movie went to the remake Carrie, although the film’s star Chloë Grace Moretz did not receive an award for her performance.
In terms of the “feel good” factor, American Idol favorite Jennifer Hudson won Favorite Humanitarian, she shared the award with her older sister Julia, for starting the Julian D. King Gift Foundation which the two sister’s created to honor their murdered family members.
Two first timer’s won awards on the night. Kaley Cuoco won Favorite Comedic TV Actress and Queen Latifah, singer/songwriter and general entertainment “Jill of all trades” picked up a gong as Favorite New Talk Show Host.
This year’s People’s Choice Awards was the 40th annual ceremony and another multiple winner was the AMC network that got two gongs for Favorite Cable TV Drama for The Walking Dead and Favorite Series We Miss Most for Breaking Bad. In area of music, Justin Timberlake took Favorite Album, for The 20/20 Experience; Favorite R&B Artist and Favorite Male Artist.
Taylor Swift did not go home empty handed as she got Favorite Country Artist. Britney Spears won for Favorite Pop Artist and Demi Lovato for Favorite Female Artist. The biggest news of the night had to do with Sandra Bullock taking home four trophies at the People’s Choice Awards. Her multiple wins even outshone TV show host favorite Ellen DeGeneres.
