Seth Meyers Ready for ‘Late Night’

Seth Meyers

Seth Meyers is now the proud new owner of the Late Night ceremonial host pickle. On February 24, Seth Meyers will prove if he is ready for Late Night. The past Tuesday, the soon-to-be-former Weekend Update anchor was handed the prized pickle by his former SNL cast mate. Meyers is set to be the forth host in the history of the Late Night program.

The Late Night hosting gig for Meyers comes after thirteen seasons as a member of Saturday Night Live.  He first became one of the Not Ready For Primetime Players in 2001, and was promoted to writing supervisor after just three seasons. Meyers auditioned for the Weekend Update co-anchor position next to Tina Fey in 2004, but lost out to Amy Poehler. Seth became the lead writer and head anchor of Weekend Update following Fey’s departure in the 2006-2007 season.

Meyers and Poehler would co-anchor the Weekend Update desk for two seasons before Amy left the show. Seth led the desk alone until late last season when he was joined by Cecily Strong. Meyers is the longest serving anchor of Weekend Update beating hosts like Dennis Miller and Colin Quinn by several years. He will go onto be the second longest serving cast member of the late night comedy program following only Darrell Hammond by a single season. The final night on Saturday Night Live for Meyers will come this weekend when Melissa McCarthy hosts the show. Seth Meyers readies his version of Late Night with Amy Poehler as his first guest on Feb. 24.

Jimmy Fallon was first announced the host of Late Night in 2008. Fallon prepared to take over the talk show from fellow former SNL cast member Conan O’Brien after it was announced that O’Brien would step in for Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. On March 2, 2009, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon premiered with Robert DeNiro, Justin Timberlake, Nick Carter and musical guest Van Morrison. Prior to his years as the host of Late Night, Fallon spent six seasons on Saturday Night Live. Fallon would co-anchor the desk of Weekend Update with Tina Fey from the beginning of the 2000 season until his departure to pursue a film career in 2004. Fallon won a Grammy award in 2013 for Best Comedy Album. The album titled Blow Your Pants Off features guest appearances by Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, Justin Timberlake, and Stephen Colbert amongst others.  Jimmy Fallon starts his new job at The Tonight Show on February 17, when he takes over for Jay Leno.

Late Night aired its first episode back in 1984 with David Letterman as its host. When Letterman departed in 1993, he introduced and passed the oversized pickle to Conan O’Brien. It has now become tradition to pass the pickle onto the successor of the show. O’Brien went onto be the longest serving host in the show’s history, staying on from 1993 until the messy exit in 2009. Jimmy Fallon now goes down as the shortest serving host. Late Night With Seth Meyers will be ready for air on Monday, February 24, 2014.
