Today General Motors expanded its ignition switch recall to include four more models.
The additional models include the Saturn Ion (2003-2007), the Chevrolet HHR (2006-2007), the Pontiac Solstice (2007) and the Saturn Sky (2007).
The Chevy Cobalt and the Pontiac G5 (2005-2007 years for both models) were previously identified as having the faulty ignition switches.
General Motors also revised the number of crashes associated with the problem upward from 22 to 31. In addition, the number of front-crash deaths associated with the recalled ignition switches rose from six to 13.
The total number of vehicles being recalled now amounts to 1.4 million.
The defective switches are prone to suddenly moving from “run” to “accessory” if jarred or pulled by a heavy key chain. When this occurs, the engine shuts off and the front air bags become disabled.
