Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of American Vogue, unintentionally sparkled something that could possibly become the feud of the year with Italian designer Giorgio Armani. He openly lashed out at her during a press conference after Milan Fashion Week for skipping the preview of his signature line to rush to Paris. Although the editor is known for being the muse of movie The Devil Wears Prada and has a fearless attitude towards fashion creators, the designer did not shy away from publicly hitting out at her, without mentioning any names in his statement.
Giorgio Armani began the post-show press conference by criticizing Anna Wintour’s lack of professionalism for not showing up to his fall 2014 runway show, thus starting the fashion world’s feud of the year for being one designer who speaks his mind.
“She is influential and powerful,” the designed said. “But, perhaps, I’m influential as well.”
WWD reported that Anna Wintour was not the only reason Armani was upset: he told reporters backstage after his show ended that the Milan Fashion Week calendar should be changed in order to maintain high-profile designers until the end. The designer blamed Camera della Moda, which presides over the schedule, because the last day of the show was “empty” and he was the only big brand to impress the crowd.
Mario Boselli, president of Camera della Moda, told WWD that he spoke with Armani and the issue has been resolved. “In a certain way, it’s right that the important journalists stay until the end of the week, and next season, we will try to guarantee the presence of other big brands the last day,” Boselli said.
However, the designer still criticized Camera della Moda’s refusal to coordinate the dates of Milan Fashion Week with the world’s other major events of this kind. As a result, journalists like Anna Wintour have to leave before the last show and attract the fury of designers like Giorgio Armani, who seems set to win the title for the feud of the year.
Anna Wintour, Scolded Live During Press Conference
Since Anna Wintour left for Paris before seeing the designer’s show in order to attend the Fashion Week in the capital of France, he felt the need to blast Vogue’s editor for unprofessionalism. Even though he was assured that the magazine also sent other senior executives to attend his show, Armani compared her absence to paying a visit to the dentist, as WWD reported. “If you go to see your dentist and he puts you in the hands of his assistant, what’s your reaction?,” the designer asked the public.
He openly talked about the fact that she went to Paris and missed Milan’s ready-to-wear collection and almost declared a war when he admitted that she is powerful, but pointed out that so is he.
Wintour’s representative at Condé Nast told WWD that the editor “has the greatest respect for Giorgio Armani and everything he has done for Italy and fashion worldwide.” The star and only major turn on Milan Fashion Week’s last day did not hide his disappointment and continued the attack, this time regarding fellow Italian labels which forgot that clothing items need to have a function and “commercial aspect.”
It is unlikely that the Giorgio Armani vs. Anna Wintour match will continue, but the post-show press conference could be remembered for the designer’s burst which became the feud of the year.
