Move aside Miley Cyrus. Dame Helen Mirren just showed the world one of her very best twerks at the 2014 Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year Awards on Thursday this week. The general consensus is pretty much that the 68-year-old did it better than you, Miley.
There she was, on stage at Harvard University in Massachusetts, accepting the honor of being the very prestigious 2014 Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year. During the event, Mirren is told that she must get the Queens to guess what her various clues are, “without uttering a peep.” She did make an error with the first one, by crying out “Oh! Big Ben!,” but got it right from then on.
While signs were held up for her to mime various objects, she tried her best, but the guy got cheeky and held up a sign saying “Twerking.”
Helen Mirren, the Oscar winner said, “I refuse to do it. I’m going to find another way around it!” and then tried to sign the word “twerk” very unsuccessfully to much laughter. In what comes next, her language was censored just a little in the video, but caused huge amusement among the crowd of students.
She gave up trying to sign and did something that she called “absolutely humiliating,” Mirren shook her behind and twerked very effectively for the crowd. In fact, as you can see from the video, Helen Mirren shows the whole world just how to twerk.
Reportedly this isn’t the first time she’s tried to do the tricky move. She told the media that she had tried to do it in her bedroom, in private, in front of the mirror “very unsuccessfully.” Now it seems she finally got the moves right.
She was also asked a series of rather bizarre questions by the students, including whether she would be able to beat up Meryl Streep in a fight, to which Mirren replied, “Meryl would win, definitely. She’s bigger, stronger and mentally stronger than I am.”
She was also paraded through Harvard Square in the town in the great company of two drag actors, Tony Oblen and Ethan Hardy, to tumultuous cheers.
For those wondering what the award is all about, Hasty Pudding Theatricals is the oldest US undergraduate drama society. Since 1951, each year they have bestowed the Woman of the Year Award and from 1967 on, they added the Man of the Year Award.
While the awards are always treated very seriously by those accepting them, and they always do attend the ceremony, they are subjected to a celebratory “roast,” and a parade around the campus afterwards.
In 2013, the awardees were Marion Cotillard as Woman of the Year and Kiefer Sutherland as Man of the Year. On February 7, 2014, Emmy winner Neil Patrick Harris is the next to receive the honor as Man of the Year.
Helen Mirren is in great company indeed as past recipients include Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, Dame Judi Dench, Elizabeth Taylor and Steven Spielberg.
It seems that she can’t go wrong these days as Mirren will also be receiving a BAFTA Fellowship at the 2014 awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in central London on February 16.
So does everyone think Dame Helen Mirren does it better than Miley Cyrus, as she shows the world how to twerk at the 2014 Hasty Pudding Awards?
