The Nets on Sunday announced that they signed on Jason Collins to a 10 day contract. Collins will be the NBA’s first player to be openly gay in their storied history.
GM Billy King stated that it was decision for basketball and had nothing to do with making headlines. Collins has the size and experience the Nets need in order to increase their inside depth. Collins will start this coming Sunday with his new team as they face the Los Angeles Lakers.
Jason has said that his goal was to prove his worth and earn a contract with one of the NBA teams. He made that goal a reality today. He was commended by NBA commissioner Adam Silver on the accomplishment. It looks as though the NBA is entering a new era of inclusion with the Brooklyn Nets taking the lead in that endeavor. The news, first reported by ESPN.com comes at a time when more and more LGBT athletes will see an increase in opportunities at all levels of sports competition.
