It has been reported that thousands of Ukranian police using stun grenades and water cannons stormed the main protest camp at Independence Square in Kiev today in an attempt to remove opposition members. There are now nine confirmed dead, including two police officers as well as seven of the protestors. While the fires that have been raging in the capital city of Kiev are now mostly under control, smoke can still be seen billowing up in a live feed of the area where the conflict took place.
According to the Associated Press, the police officers took apart some of the barricades surrounding Independence Square and set tents on fire. However, around 20,000 protestors – armed with rocks, bats and fire bombs – fought back while singing their country’s national anthem.
The leader of the opposition, Vitali Klitschko, is reported to have urged the protestors to defend the encampment, saying, “This is an island of freedom and we will defend it.”
As Kiev continues to burn, many around the world are watching via the following live feed which is being broadcast by Espreso TV.
